Cherry Lambic Sour Ale

Winner of a gold medal at the 2018 Great American Beer Festival, Transatlantique Kriek begins its life in oaken vessels of Gert Christiaens’ Oud Beersel, a 130-year-old lambic brewery in the Zenne valley of Belgium – home of authentic Lambic beer. After time spent aging in wood, Oud Beersel’s lambic is blended with tart Polish cherries and shipped across the Atlantic to New Belgium. In concert with Oud Beersel’s cherry lambic, or Kriek, we blend an equal portion of golden sour ale matured for 1 – 3 years in our oak vessels called foeders. 50% Sour Golden Ale blended with 50% Traditional Cherry Lambic Ale leads to an intense cherry nose, a sour flash across the palate and a refreshing, mouthwatering finish.

Location: 22 oz bottle from Hay Merchant, 2/11/14

Aroma: The nose is fruity and sweet, with some mild wood and tart notes
Appearance: Pours a clear, bright reddish-pink color with a fizzy pink head and light lace
Flavor: The flavor is fairly heavy sweet, there's some wood/tartness, but it leans sweet
Palate: The body is fairly light, with a lively carbonation, and mildly tart finish
Overall Impression: I'm was surprised this wasn't classified as a Lambic, but I guess fruit beer covers it. Anyway, this is a fairly sweet offering. It's decent, but it could use a touch more tartness to balance it out. The sweetness just overwhelms everything else. Still, decent stuff.

22 ounce bottle into globe glass, bottled on 1/2/2013. Pours fairly crystal clear pale ruby red color with a 1-2 finger dense light pink head with good retention, that reduces to a small cap that lingers. Spotty soapy lacing clings around the glass, with a fair amount of streaming carbonation. Aromas of tart cherry, cherry skin, apple, pear, grape, hay, light pepper, red wine, vinegar, funk, and yeast earthiness. Very nice aromas with good balance of cherry, yeast, and funk notes; with good strength. Taste of tart cherry, cherry skin, pear, apple, grape, hay, red wine, light pepper, light vinegar, light funk, and yeast earthiness. Light fruity tartness on the finish; with lingering notes of cherry, cherry skin, pear, apple, grape, red wine, light vinegar, light funk, and earthiness on the finish for a good bit. Nice balance and complexity of cherry and yeast flavors; with a good sweetness/tartness balance and zero cloying flavors after the finish. Medium-high carbonation and medium bodied; with a smooth, crisp, and lightly acidic mouthfeel that is nice. Alcohol is very well hidden with only a slight warming present after the finish. Overall this is a very good fruit lambic style. Good balance and complexity of fruit and yeast ester flavors; and very smooth and crisp to drink for the ABV. A very enjoyable offering.

Refrigerated brown bomber poured into a white wine glass. Pours clear red with medium pink head. Little lacing, light body, low carbonation, and light tart cherry aroma. Taste is tart cherry. A richer cherry taste would have been better for me. For $22 a bomber I will pass on this every time.

22 oz bottle. Pours copper red with a light pink head. General fruity tart aroma with red cherry. Flavor seems like a fairly straightforward red cherry beer. Bit of a biscuity finish. Tastes good, but there’s no real complexity here.
