Our Abstrakt journey continues with AB:17; a three-coffee rye imperial porter. Big chocolately roasty malts, spicy rye, and more coffee than Twin Peaks - we’ve added espresso in the mash, cafetiere in the boil, and whole bean in the whirlpool and the FV. Courtesy of Has Bean, we’ve got a rich mix of spicy, bitter and heady coffee flavours mixing with the vanilla pods we threw in for good measure. AB:17 is in the final days of maturation and is almost ready for bottling. It is tasting incredibly smooth and decadent. A perfect winter beer?

Medium cream to beige head, fast gone over pitch-black beer, pouring viscously. Liquourice, jap, roasted, chocolate, soy sauce, meat marinade, sweet-salty. Dry-bitterish flavour, roasted, but this time with salty jap - zoute drop; Talk about a surprising flavour in a beer. I get no vanilla in this. Well-bodied, slick-oily; feels better carbonated than it looks. It’s original, but not really to my taste, I’m afraid.

Black color with big beige head. Aroma of coffee, vanilla, the rye is more present by *not* being malty. Taste is rich, warming, coffee, chocolate, vanilla, oatmeal stout mouthfeel. ABV is well hidden. Low carbonation. Amazing!

375mL bottle, pours black with a small brown head. Nose brings out notes of coffee, cocoa, a little roast and some vanilla. Flavour is along the same lines, with loads of espresso upfront, followed by roasted malt and dry cocoa. Dominated by the coffee. Medium bodied and low-to-medium sweetness. Excellent stuff.

By this point in the evening my taste buds were pretty shot but I didn’t find it so memorable. It was a smooth dark beer I didn’t get all that much vanilla or rye from it nor did I get the high ABV. OK.

Bottle from BottleDog, Kings Cross (area) consumed at Pickets Lock campsite, Saturday 4th April 2015 Lots of chocolate and certainly some coffee but with plenty of soft creamy vanilla. It’s like a creamy coffee ice cream, really liking it. Loz thinks it is a little light on coffee, I disagree, it’s got plenty of coffee, it’s just that it’s a bit part player. Really good beer.
