Our Abstrakt journey continues with AB:17; a three-coffee rye imperial porter. Big chocolately roasty malts, spicy rye, and more coffee than Twin Peaks - we’ve added espresso in the mash, cafetiere in the boil, and whole bean in the whirlpool and the FV. Courtesy of Has Bean, we’ve got a rich mix of spicy, bitter and heady coffee flavours mixing with the vanilla pods we threw in for good measure. AB:17 is in the final days of maturation and is almost ready for bottling. It is tasting incredibly smooth and decadent. A perfect winter beer?

Opaque dark brown - black beer, good tan head. Oaky coffee nose. Palate is smooth and a little soft. Mild fine carbonation. Smooth dark malts, some dry cream. Bitter coffee, mildly earthy. Whisper of esters. Smooth dry finish. Bitter coffee linger. The coffee tastes a bit burned to me, and a Coffee expert once told me this should never be the case. Drinkable for sure, but harsh.

Abstrakt 01 - 25 Vertical @ Brewdog Sheps Bush. Almost opaque dark brown beer, small tan head. Palate is smooth and semi dry, reasonable fine carbonation. Smooth dark malts, some mellow dark chocolate and coffee. Mild tangy fruits on the light spicy finish. Weak then and nothing much has changed really. 3.1

Bottle #1679 from BrewDog online. It pours jet black with a decent dark tan head. The nose is rich roast, earthy, a big fat smack of coffee, toasted rye bread, faint vanilla and toffee. The taste is smooth, rich roast, light spice, dark chocolate, lots of coffee, mild acidity, dark fruits, berry compote, earth, some alcohol warmth, charred wood with a toasty finish. Full body, moderate carbonation and velvety mouth-feel. Good depth. Punchy, yet well-rounded. If you like big coffee stout/porters this is for you.

Bottle at home split with Sarah. Ordered from Brewdog online. Really dark black / brown coloured pour with a lasting dense dark tan head. Aroma is complex dark roasted grains, boozey fortified wine, wood, tangy dried fruits, vanilla and a touch of sharp apple. Flavour is really nicely layered, smooth roasted creamy coffee, dried fruits with wood, vanilla and a bit of booze. Palate is full bodied, velvety, low to moderate carbonation. Lingering spicy note i guess from the rye and smootth roasted coffee. Very smooth for the abv. Another winner in the Abstrakt series. Lovely

(Keg at BrewDog Helsinki, 20150109) The beer poured black. Its head was medium sized and lightly brown. Aroma had vineousness, coffee, burnt malts and ash. Palate was full bodied and warming with medium carbonation. Flavours were coffee, ash, burnt malts, sweetness and bitterness. Aftertaste was burnt and bitter. The contents of a coffee pot that was left on for too long time and then poured in mixture of vanilla and burnt malts.
