12 ounce bottle. Bright amber orange pour. Large frothy beige head. Toasted malt aroma offers a hint of spicy hops. Bittersweet toasted malt flavor. Somewhat lighter in body than expected. Maltiness is diminished by the peppery hops. Looks great, but flavor is underwhelming.

This is a bit of a throwback, 90s or early 2000s type IPA - not accounting for the specific hops used, more just the overall construction. And by that I mean it has a fairly big malt body for an IPA, and not overly bright or bitter with the hop profile. Hazy golden or copper color. Nose has hops first, lightly resiny, somewhat sweatsocky, maybe a tropical fruit. Some nutty and caramel malt notes. Balanced profile, features a honeyed melanoidiny type malt, herbal hop flavors, balanced finish with resinous hops flavors lingering on the tongue. There's rye? Maybe I can tell that. I probably wouldn't have said that if it weren't for the commercial description. What is a winter ipa anyway? Is it extra maltiness? OK fine, I don't really care. The real question - is this something to drink again? Am I ok with having the whole sixer? And the answer is yes.

Very mild, not a great representation of a red IPA, more like an old-school brewpub IPA from back before the style dominated all things beerdom. Rye adds a nice spicy punch on the back end, but the rest of the flavors are muted. Modest notes of grapefruit and paassion fruit, with moderate caramel and biscuit underneath. Pine on the finish, with very little bitterness on the fade. Not bad, but not memorable, either.

OK, got to confess, drank this right out of the brown bottle that, by the way, is not twist off, heheeh; but it is slightly hazy pale. Even so, I can tell this is pale yellow with a slight haze, even thru the brown glass. Smell is slightly cabbage IPA. Whew, its really foaming up as I take swigs. Even tho its 7% there still is lots of veggie cabbage taste, you know, like a session IPA, like the smell. Weird veggie hop bitterness. Low average co2 level. Hey, this says red, and to confirm it, I just put it into my tasting glass. And yes, it is a little darker than usual but its not a red ale. WTF. Yes it not red nor even maroon. Its more like a slightly darker pale, maybe shades of brown. Anyway it may be just anther 1 of ten gazillion IPA out there but at least its a little more tame than most.
