Black Isle and Poppels from Sweden collaborated a year or so ago to make a fantastic imperial stout called Systems Theory. Since then the beer has been maturing in whisky barrels and is now ready to make a reappearance.
There are two versions – a West coast version (using Islay barrels which gives a peaty flavour) and an East coast version which has oak, vanilla and dark chocolate notes.

Draft. A black beer with a lazing dark brown head. The aroma has note notes of roasted malt, alcohol and over ripe fruits. The flavor is sweet with notes of roasted malt, alcohol and straw, leading to a dry fínish.

Bottle shared on train between Truro and Exeter on tour to 22 southern counties with OGJ and EE 04.01.18.Can shared on train between Truro and Exeter on tour to 22 southern counties with OGJ and EE 04.01.18. Ebony. Fine brown head. Excellent aroma of wooden ships, tar, old seahouses and peat, balanced with malt sweetness and bitterness.

Bottle from the Beer Cave, Edinburgh. Appearance - very deep brown to black and opaque. Lovely nicely proportioned fawn head. Nose - booze and smoked whisky dominate. Some fruitcake coming through laterally. Taste - again peat smoke and dried fruit. Treacle. Palate - medium to full bodied and smoky throughout. Overall - the smoke note is so dominant it kinda kills everything else.

Bottle. Color: Back, light brown head. Aroma: Roasted malt, pretty strong iodine. Taste: Srarting sweetish roasted malt with notes of dark chocolate and hints of black coffee, followed by umami and pretty strong medicine-like iodine and peat notes. Over medium bitter finish with dry and bit sticky mouthfeel. Bit boozy whiskey notes. Lacking balance, the flavours don't mix together but are following each other. The aroma is better than the taste, unfortunately.

Bottle @ Van Moll Brewpub. Opaque jet black color, decent sized brown colored head. Aroma and flavor is malts, subtle whisky and wood notes, dark malts, soft roast, moderate malt bitter notes and some peat but soft, a nice addition to the beer. Very very well done. Quite good!

Pours black, small tanned head. Smell is peated roasty, strong. Intensely peated. Taste is sharp, bit bitter, roasty. Peated tad sweet. Not a fan of peat ( personal opinion) yet this is also way to strongly peated ( general quality). Decent body, médium to medium low Carbo.

Keg at Salt Horse. It pours near black with a small tan head. The aroma is rich peated whisky character, bonfires, burnt tires, medicinal, ashy, rocky road, dried cherry, chocolate, espresso, nougat and vanilla ice cream. The taste is dry, bitter, slick, rich roasted malt, charred wood, big Islay whisky character, medicinal, smoked peat, dark fruits, plum, prune, date, spicy, warming alcohol, tannin, leather and dark chocolate brownie with a medicinal.and warming finish. Medium to full body and fine carbonation. Incredibly flavourful with a big peated whisky character. The best Black Isle beer I have ever had.
