Part of Jopen’s ‘Ultimate Advent calendar’, a series of 24 beers intended to ease the wait till Christmas during the Advent period – a commercial idea also exercised by other companies. Thanks Craftmember for sharing. Medium sized, pale greyish beige, moussy, opening head, black robe with burgundy to red wine coloured edges. Aroma of cappuccino and latté but also mocha ice cream and actual coffee powder – coffee clearly is the star of the show here, next to Nutroma cream, ‘Haagse hopjes’, toffee, cognac, cold Irish coffee, milk powder, ‘koetjesreep’, almond. Quite straightforwardly sweet onset, raisins, candied dates, softish carb, full and creamy mouthfeel, toffee and pecan nut pie sensations – but then that huge amount of coffee takes over, with a powdery feel even, combining nicely with that oatmeal creaminess into a very convincing cappuccino effect. Some warming alcohol in the end which in combination with the heavy coffee flavouring creates an association with (cold) Irish coffee, but hop bitterness remains very low. Very creamy, quite extreme coffee stout, a bit of a one-trick pony perhaps despite its intentions to evoke a White Russian cocktail and reference to the movie “The Big Lebowski”, but certainly very enjoyable.
