Hardywood Bourbon Cru is brewed in the fashion of the abbey quadrupel, the grand cru of many of Belgium’s revered monastic breweries. Bourbon Cru displays a sunset orange hue with a substantial head and brilliant clarity after months of barrel ageing. The maturity and melding of flavors brought on by the freshly drained, half-decade old Virginia bourbon barrels from Fredericksburg’s A. Smith Bowman Distillery lends an extraordinary sense of harmony to Bourbon Cru. Almond toffee and oaky vanilla aromatics give way to dark cherries, raisins and mature whiskey. A bit of plum flavor is greeted by caramel overtones and an assertive yet incredibly rounded body and a lingering, bourbon-laced finish.

Bottle shared late night during RBWG 2015. Pours clear russet with a creamy off-white head. The nose has some tangerine, marmalade, grainy pale bread. Big sweet flavor with vanilla cake, more tangerine, hay. Medium to full bodied with average carbonation. Warming finish with rich, ripe citrus fruits, melon, tangerine. Decent.

Bottle - Sweet bourbon notes and light dark fruit. Clear Amber with a decent beige head. Bourbon notes, dark fruit and booze on the throat. Not enough quad, too much bourbon.

This brew pours a dark reddish-mahogany color with a medium dense light beige head that recedes gradually. Small patches of lacing. Aroma of malt, caramel and dark fruit. Full-bodied with flavors of dark fruit, earthy yeast and caramel malt. Subtle oaky bourbon in the background. The finish is oaky vanilla and dark fruit. Above average overall.

Burnt amber. Nose is very yeasty and bready with some figs and residual sugars. Taste is uber sweet with some oaky vanilla notes but is overall just too sweet. Tastes more like an old ale than a quad. It’s good but very forgettable.
