Can. Almost opaque dark brown beer, small tan head. Palate is smooth and has mild dryness, decent fine carbonation. Brewed to a 19th century recipe, you might expect this to taste old skool and it doesn't disappoint. In fact the retro nature of this one is it's charm. Smooth malts, a touch of malt cream that doesn't get too sweet. A touch of chocolate, again not that sweet. Mellow coffee, slightly earthy, dominates the back end, along with a touch of soft overripe fruit. Smooth semi dry finish. Comes together very well. Always nice to revisit the past and if the stuff they were drinking 150 years ago tasted like this, I bet it was immensely popular.

17/01/2020. Cask at the 11th Elysian Winter Beer Festival. Pours very dark brown with a bubbly off-white to beige head. Aroma of coffee, dark fruit, roasted malt, chocolate and liquorice. Moderate sweetness, medium roasted bitterness. Medium body, oily texture, soft carbonation. Nice one.
