an imperial farmhouse stout in Westland whisky casks

While we often brew bright, lower-alcohol beer you can enjoy by the pint, Rankin demands to be sipped. Rich and bold, Rankin is an imperial farmhouse stout aged for nine months in Westland ex-bourbon casks from their Cask Exchange program. Rankin has generous notes of chocolate, vanilla, salted toffee and just an ever so slight hint of tartness and funk in the woodsy forest. Everything you love about a big stout, but fermented a tad drier by our house strain of wild and feral yeasts and bacteria.

Tasting at Salesforce
Black colour, persistent beige head. Aroma of roasted malts, bourbon, and some sour fruit. Good body strength, it's fairly dry, a bit too much carbonation; roasted malts, but without excess, and burnt sugars, some booze, some yeast action, funk, mild sourness.
Fairly good.

750ml @ Sales Force. Appearance: very dark brown with a beige head. Aroma: some bourbon, some fruity acidity, inky, some chocolate notes. Taste: along the same lines, low acidity, lots of roasted malts and fruity notes. Overall: pretty good for the farmhouse stout.

Poured from 750mL bottle (bottled Aug 2020). Black with beige head. Mild chocolate, barrel, funk, balanced. Sour quality is subdued, enjoyable.

Jet black with a decent light brown head. Light soured dark malts. Dark roast, sweet and light sour. Sourness is light and blends well with a touch of whisky. Solid.

750mL bottle, pours black with a medium light brown head. Aroma brings out some nice farmhouse funk and some bourbon barrels, with plenty of oakiness and spicy earthiness. Flavour is unusual, with loads of funky bugs, whiskey barrels, and a hint of tartness. I don't usually like buggy stouts, but this works surprisingly well. Excellent.

Dark brown, just a thin head. Lots of bourbon. Light tartness. It’s okay. Light roast, but I won’t say it comes together magically.
