Poker Face Lychee

Bottle from Speciaalbierpakket. Aroma is fruity with sweetish lychee, perfumed notes, wheaty malt, citrus, yeast, with soft spicy notes. Flavour is on the sweet side and mildly bitter. Body is medium. Soft and sweetish with plenty of lychee, very enjoyable.

Fles thuis geprobeerd met LiekevdV. Het is een troebel oranje achtig bier met een dun wit schuim. Het heeft een wat lychee achtige geur, omdat je weet dat het er in zit. De smaak is moutig, zoet en wat fruitig.

Straw blond with no head. Aroma and flavour have chewing gum sweetness, lyche. Quite floral and light.

Clear blond to orange beer, creamy irregular off-white to yellowish head, little stable, bit adhesive, leaving some lacing in the glass. Aroma: pretty fruity, lychee and passion fruit, bit yeasty, sweetish. MF: ok carbon, medium body. Taste: pretty fruity, bit sweet, lychee, pretty bitter, orange peel, some grapefruit, coriander notes. Aftertaste: bit yeasty, fruity, lychee, some candy, little bitter, decent! Don't know what's up with all the haters.

Bottle from Willems, Grobbendonk. Hazy yellow colour, creamy foam. Sweet fruity nose (lychee), sweet malts, some lemon and spices. Not very bad.

Het Nest, still playing the cards of lighting up Belgian beer traditions, presents this lychee version of their Pokerface witbier, curious to find out what they did with the basic beer... Bottle from Fontana in Sint-Niklaas. Lightly lacing, moussy, egg-white head quickly showing some gaps here and there and eventually almost completely dissolving, over a hazy golden blonde beer with vague khaki tinge. Fruity and somewhat stale, but rather unusual aroma of raw and unripe pineapple rather than lychee even though a background lychee note is certainly there somewhere, sourdough bread, dried dill, green pear, wild leek, rainwater, pomelo juice, sourish soggy grains like in a pale lager, damp kitchen cloth even, old mashed potato, unripe starfruit, touch of green onion, coriander seed, spoiling goat cheese. Fruity, estery, lively onset, effervescent with spritzy carbonation but not too harshly so, overseeing notes of starfruit, crisp green apple and unripe banana, sweetish and sourish with the sourishness accentuated by the lively carbonation; supple, smooth body. Wheaty middle, white bread crust- and sourdough-like with a light soapy edge, while these green fruit esters linger - and then suddenly, it happens: a retronasal whiff of indeed actual lychee, manifesting itself on the tongue primarily as a crisp, fruity-acidic sour touch, which remains very mild and freshens the finish, which otherwise shows the classic Pokerface old dusty coriander seed soapiness, lingering bready and soapy 'wheatiness' and earthy, bit powdery yeastiness mingling with a lingering, floral but - especially for the style - quite spicy, peppercorn-ish hop bitter portion. Ends bitterish and sourish but both are well in balance with each other, and whatever limited sweetness there was, hardly survives this combo. Bit weird beer, but far from unpleasant and to be honest, considerably better than I was expecting when I purchased the bottle merely for the tick... The lychee is subtle in the nose, but gets its moment of glory retronasally just before the finish - a remarkable achievement really, though I am left wondering if Nest doesn't have any other beers suitable for this treatment... Odd, but then the whole 20th-century Belgian beer culture, to which this brewery largely subscribes with an overt nod to the Anglo-Saxon / international presence, is based on this kind of idiosyncratic experiments so in that sense, this is a kind of update of an old theme. Seen like that, this is quite a respectable beer indeed, though the damp kitchen cloth- and cheap pale lager-like features in the nose bothered me a bit. Still, far less bad than I was expecting.

From the tap at FOB, Rimini, Italy. Pours rather hazy pale gold with very abundant and persistent white foam, fine. Aroma is particular, with some spiciness and most of all a sweet feeling of something difficult to define which I can only blame to the lychee, given the beer name. Body is slightly dense, with moderate carbonation. Taste is sweet, again with the lychee being dominant. Finish is average.

F: not big, not long lasting, white. C: blonde, hazy. A: bit malty, sugary, lychee, bit citrus, bit yeasty. T: in the taste is lychee much more prominent, light fruity sourness, peach, floral, bit dusty, light body with medium carbonation, aroma is bit tricky but taste is very nice, refreshing, 33cl bottle from Prik & Tik Leuven.
