MacLir is a superb Wheat Beer, with resin hops and lemon fruit on the aroma, banana and lemon in the mouth, and a big, bitter finish dominated by the hops, juicy malt and citrus fruit. Unlike lightly hopped Bavarian or Belgian wheat beers, MacLir also comes armed with a veritable oast house full of little green plants.
Ingredients: Pride of Ringwood from New Zealand, Cascade and Cluster from the US, Saaz from the Czech Republic, Styrian Goldings from Slovenia, and First Gold and Goldings from England.

500ml bottle. Clear golden colour with average, thick, creamy, fairly lasting, minimally lacing, white head. Citrusy hoppy aroma, lemon notes, malty background with lemon biscuit notes. Taste is citrusy hoppy, notes of lemon and lemon biscuit, wheaty and minimally grainy notes flashing up in between, a strawy and grassy touch. Light bodied, close to watery, Golden/Wheat Ale border crosser.

Bottle from Ales By Mail [120814]
Golden, slight haze, frothy big white head, good lacing
Aroma of soft pale malts, soft cereal, soft fruits
Taste of pale soft sweet malts, soft sweet fruits, touch of apricot, slightly spicy, some caramel, dab of soft cereal, could do with a bit more hops but flavour is decent but mellow
Palate - soft carb, medium body, good palate. Finish of soft fruits, some dry bitter cereal
Overall - Easy going, soft and mellow. Comes across as good golden ale with a dab of wheat rather than a wheat beer. A lot better than the rates here would suggest

Bottle, thanks to Cuso. Aroma is fruity, earthy, English hops. Clear golden colour, poor head. Taste is rather hoppy, earthy, lightly fruity. Light high bitterness. A bit metallic in the finish. Average, unfortunately this did not really impress me.

Bottle from B&M Bargains; quite a clear light amber pour for a wheat beer, with a creamy off white head, aroma has subtle wheat and spice, taste is all very subtle wheat, a hint of sweetness and spice.

500ml Bottle from B&M bargains: BBD end of Nov 2014, poured into a beautiful ’Munchner Kindl’ (HB) Weizen glass at home on 22nd Aug 2014. Only a slight haze to my golden pour, a good full sized white head sat on top. Plenty of carbonation bubbles rising up through the almost clear body. Mild wheat aroma, with a sweetness that carries on into the taste. Thought it might be more Germanic in nature, hence the glass I used: it did not however have the vanilla or banana flavours I hoped for. This was just ’wheaty’ and sadly a little bland in the flavour stakes. Refreshing enough, but a bit boring.

Wässriger, dezent hopfiger Antrunk mit steigender Bitterkeit. Diese wird in Mittelteil noch stärker, trocken, ok. 6/7/7/7/6/7

Bottle from B&M. Clear gold. Thickish, tight, white, lasting head. Looks good. Buttery, bready, and a bit grassy. Taste is light dry. Thin palate. More of the buttery thing. Lacks oomph. Can’t complain too much, though, at just over a quid a pop.

500ml bottle from B&M. Clear light gold with a white head. Honey aroma, with sweet citrus. The flavour has citrus also and the hops balance the sweetness.
