Strong (though not necessarily ’imperial’) stout with honey, strawberries and chocolate added - apparently intended as a Valentine’s gift. Thick, bubbly, moussy, ’papery’, pale yellowish beige head, cobweb-lacing but consisting of large, loosely arranged bubbles and therefore falling apart quickly; very dark bronze robe, black core, with mahogany brown, translucent, hazy edges. Aroma is actually less strong and perfumey than I expected based on the concept and added ingredients: burnt toast, moldy old walnut shells, sourish berry juice which I assume represents the strawberries but after that a ’real’ and convincing, sweet strawberry scent arises, fermenting tree leaves, a thin sweet honey accent, butterscotch, nutmeg, dried flowers, cold coffee, pear, blueberries, cocoa powder diluted in water instead of milk, old raisins, forest floor, moist ashes. Sourish and sweetish onset, berry juice-like with hints of black cherries and brambleberries along with some blue plum and blackcurrant, a mixture of esters with the actual strawberry effect but lacking a bit in the ’sensual’ sweetness of ripe strawberry, medium to softish carbo, slick, bit oily and even lightly astringent mouthfeel. Supple caramelly and thoroughly nutty maltiness in the middle, sweetish core with sharper bittering, toasted edges especially towards the finish, berry sourishness overseeing it all, but honey remains very limited - I guess it must have fermented out as good as completely by now. Chocolate appears as a kind of ’moelleux’ feeling and added ’dark’ bitterness in the finish but, like the honey, fails to make a convincing impression. Ends with toasted bittersweet but fairly thinnish maltiness, earthy and spicy hop bitterness lingering for a while after swallowing, something glueish, coffee-like roasted bitterness but thinly so, light astringency from the ongoing (straw?)berry juice effect - indeed effectuating a mild sourness. An afterglow of warming alcohol is detectable but not dominating; some residual sugary sweetness sticks a bit to the teeth after swallowing too (perhaps this is what is left of the added honey?). A strange concoction, this Valentine’s stout, I doubt if this can charm a lady’s (or anyone’s) heart the way it was intended... The strawberry effect is there in the nose, volatile as in many a beer using actual strawberries, but is reduced to a lightly astringent sour berry effect in the mouth; the chocolate is equally noticeable but feels thin and not too pleasantly bitter (I think more chocolate malts would have been a better option than actual chocolate); and the honey is far, far away. Beneath this lurks a decent stout, which nevertheless seems to lack a bit in body and thick, black maltiness and roastedness. The overall result seems a bit unbalanced, drinkable for sure, but with different factors clashing too much with one another. Interesting beer, but I expected way more - and had far better beers from this gypsy brewery as well, in fact this is one of their least impressive ones for me, so far.

(Keg at Kitty’s, 20170215) The beer poured black. Its head was medium sized and lightly brown. Aroma had honey and burnt malts. Palate was medium bodied with medium carbonation. Flavours were burnt malts, sourness, sweetness, honey and bitterness. Aftertaste was burnt and sour. A messy imperial stout.

Draught @ Kitty’s. Pretty much black in color with a thick off white head. Aroma has citrusy hops, roastedness. Flavor has tartness, roasted malt, ash, hops. Too tart.
