Built from the backbone of Stone's classic Imperial Russian Stout, Stone Totalitarian Imperial Russian Stout certainly celebrates the hallmarks of the style - it pours jet-black with a fluffy chocolate head and tastes of deeply dark fruit flavors with rich chocolate and coffee overtones. Yet, however old world in nature, this particular rendition of an IRS is flavored with new world hops, intensifying its berry flavors and aroma while subtly introducing a juicy melon undertone. The result is a spectacularly sinful delight. Don't say we didn't warn you, comrade.

In 2017, we took a year off from releasing this amazing beer, causing some to worry that this was the end of an era. But in 2018, this deep, dark stout returns as big as ever and with a few upgrades. We added flaked oats for a smooth mouth feel and Belma hops, which round out the dark fruit component, providing an ever so slight hop edge.

(Bottle, 0.355 l - bottled on 22.02.18, from Alko Arkadia, 20181019) The beer poured black. Its head was medium sized and lightly brown. Aroma had burnt malts, dark chocolate, cocoa powder and sweet malty bread. Palate was full bodied and warming with medium carbonation. Flavours were burnt malts, sweetness,, dark chocolate, ash, cocoa powder and bitterness. Aftertaste was burnt, boozy and bitter. A pleasant burnt brew with too much alcohol burning at the finish.

Almost black beer with medium but quickly vanishing head. Aroma has roasted malts, coffee and pine and hints of fruits. Taste has malts, chocolate, bitterness with coffee and pine and some spices. Alcohol does exist in a bit with bitterness. Almost full body, long finishing.

Sampled on draft at Urban Tap this beer poured a black color with a large foamy brown head that lingered and left great lacing. The aroma was coffee, wood and floral hops. The flavor was malty with notes of anise, coffee, vanilla, floral hops, chocolate and roasty malt. Long finish. Moderately full bodied.

355ml bottle. Pours an opaque black with a medium, creamy, long lasting, tan head that leaves curtains of lace. Sweet aroma of roasted malt, dark chocolate, caramel, licorice, coffee and a hint of smoke. Sweet, complex flavour of roasted malt, dark chocolate, caramel, licorice, molasses, toffee, brown sugar, vanilla, bitter coffee, earth and a hint of smoke with a dry, warming booze finish. Full body with a creamy, oily texture and soft carbonation. Nice complexity.

It's a pretty good Russian imperial stout. Nothing really exceptional just good. Fairly balanced for the style. Aromas are on the mild side. Little sign of the alcohol. Hint of metallic in the Finish. Still I would order it again.

8 4 8 3 17Bottle from Stone Berlin shared with Deanso in Poznan. Black with a brown head. Aroma of chocolate, cacoa powder, caramel, light roast and malt. Flavour is light heavy sweet and moderate bitter. Light full bodied with soft carbonation.
