Built from the backbone of Stone's classic Imperial Russian Stout, Stone Totalitarian Imperial Russian Stout certainly celebrates the hallmarks of the style - it pours jet-black with a fluffy chocolate head and tastes of deeply dark fruit flavors with rich chocolate and coffee overtones. Yet, however old world in nature, this particular rendition of an IRS is flavored with new world hops, intensifying its berry flavors and aroma while subtly introducing a juicy melon undertone. The result is a spectacularly sinful delight. Don't say we didn't warn you, comrade.

Stone Imperial Russian Stout has been a much anticipated special release over the years. In 2017, we took a year off from releasing this amazing beer, causing some to worry that this was the end of an era. But in 2018, this deep, dark stout returns as big as ever and with a few upgrades. We added flaked oats for a smooth mouth feel and Belma hops, which round out the dark fruit component, providing an ever so slight hop edge.

Bottle pour into tulip glass from Greg & Jane's Beer and Wine. Appearance is opaque black with light sparkle at edge of glass, 2-finger width foamy light brown head with good retention and attractive soapy lacing. Aroma is roasted malts, toffee, chocolate, mild coffee. Taste is roasted malt--lightly charred, alcohol, dark fruit. Palate is medium-to-full bodied with thick texture, soft-to-average carbonation and bittersweet finish with some alcohol warmth. Overall, less interesting taste than aroma. Good, but not spectacular.

Pour is a black with a huge tan head. Aroma is a bit of roasted malt with some bakers chocolate and an a little anise. Flavor is a decent roasted malt, with some black licorice and a bit of sweet molasses. No hops or bitterness can be found. While the roasted and char malt was decent I was looking for a bit of hops especially from Stone, it was a bit of a disappointment when I did not detect anything bitter. Decent but a little lackluster.

Straddles the line between imperial stout and black IPA, with deep, rich veins of chocolate, roast, anise, and espresso offset by unexpectedly juicy hop notes, banana-berry and melon and citrus adding a round fruitiness that, while unique, doesn’t quite reach the brutal bitter vitriol I like so much about Stone RIS. Still a good beer, though. Pours a dark, thick black with a brown head and good lacing. Smooth, viscous feel has a slight liquor warmth. Tasty.
