Old, new? It’s all the same, really. Cluster’s Last Stand defies the commonly accepted notion that strong, hoppy beers are recent arrivals on the US beer landscape. Smuttynose has teamed up with Stone Brewing Company to recreate the original, post-Prohibition Ballantine IPA recipe. That’s right; strong, 60 IBU beer was brewed in the 30’s. How do we know? We read it in Stone Brewmaster Mitch Steele’s excellent and well-researched book, “IPA, Brewing Techniques, Recipes and the Evolution of India Pale Ale.” The only difference between this beer and more contemporary IPAs are the hop varieties: Cluster, Brewers Gold, Bullion and East Kent Goldings. None of these are trendy and we were a little surprised to find out that all four were readily available. The result is a rich, copper-colored ale with a strong, refined hop profile of spiciness with a hint of grapefruit.

Bottle from Cotteridge Wines; hazy golden amber pour with a bubbly white, pine and aroma, taste has resinous pine hop, sweet caramel, tangerine, some grapefruit bitterness, tasty stuff.

Pours fuzzy blonde small whita head. Smell is hoppy, some fruits. Taste is intensely bitter, with a very full fruityness ( orange up front) . Very nice mouthfeel and carbo, fruity back. One hell of an ipa!

Flaska från SB. En östkust-IPA som lätt kvalar in som en lättare DIPA. Stor och maffig utan att smiska tunga med besk humle. Istället komplex med flera lager av smaker och en riktigt bra kropp med fin struktur och rena flerdimensionella smaker. Fruktig citruszest med lite skalbeska, blommig, lite mineraler och ett knippe färska örter med frisk mynta och lite grönpeppar. Riktigt trevlig.

Bottle - Dark amber in colour. Grapefruit, mango and sultanas in the aroma. Hoppy, tangy and fruity taste with grapefruit, biscuity malt, peach, apricot and mango. Very easy to drink.

Flaska från SB. Dofter av tropiska frukter, typ mango och ananas. Tillbakahållen doft som troligen beror på den låga temperaturen. Mjuk och len munkänsla med en hyfsat söt maltkropp, typisk östkust-IPA. Mot slutet mullrar beskan in över tungan. Välbalanserad!
