This beer will surprise you with a big hop flavor and a toasty sweet aroma. Pours black from the chocolate and de-bitterized black rye malts. This ale is medium bodied and is well flavored with hints of toffee, nutty undertones and a dry crisp finish.

Bottled, thanks heemer77. Dark brownish ruby colour, mediumsized brown foamish bubbly head. Mainly roasted malts in aroma, same in flavour. So why is this an ale? It could as well be a porter, as I have had stuff called porter which has been crappier than this. A bit to the waterier side as for the palate, but flavour is wellfilled with roasted malts, old coffee and more roast.

Almost opaque black/brown, good creamy brown head. Toasty aroma of roasted bread. Porter-like roasted, cold coffee flavor. Sweetness and light hops in the finish, coffee in the aftertaste. Alcohol is quite hidden. Some smoked/tobacco notes but not much rye found.

Very dark with minimal head. Aroma is pretty dark, but weaker than I expected. Tons of flavor for a beer that has such a thin mouthfeel. Burnt rye, mild molasses, espresso, charcoal and dark fruit are all present and blend nicely, but fade fairly quickly.

Thanks to Illinismitty for this. Huge, long lasting, light brown head that tops a dark brown brew that gives up some red highlights in strong light. Light malt aroma with nutty caramel. The flavor is well balanced with malt and light bitterness playing out to a rye bitterness in the finish. Enjoyable.

bottle - Pours black with a moderate, fading head. The aroma is of roast malts and a significant dose of hops as well. The body is moderately thick and bubbly, and the flavor is of roast malt, a bit of coffee, and rye. The finish includes some lingering hops. I thought it could have been hopped up even more, but overall it’s a quality brew.

Pours essentially black, with a brown head that actually faded in color to tan (first time I’d seen that happen). Full meringue head and heavy lacing. Strong citric hop aroma, with notes of grapefruit. Some roasted malts also apparent in the nose, showing dark chocolate. Big chocolate coffee flavor with resiny grapefruit hop flavors sitting side by side. Light roast in the finish, with a lingering medium hoppiness. Like a very hoppy stout, but lightened in body with the rye - a good idea! Very soft palate with good natural-feeling carbonation.

Bottled, while watching those "Good Guys Wear Black!" Interesting smell out of the bottle, perhaps of a cream stout with molasses stirred in. Pours deep brown, becoming black in the glass, with a thinning cola head. Taste is a deep porter, with the rye softening any possible roastiness. Can’t pick up any specifics in the hops with all this lip-smacking malt around. Yet it’s nicely dried but not soured, and there’s a touch of walnut torte in the finish. The alcohol refuses to make itself known, which can cause you trouble down the road. Much more complex than I can describe, and a fine beer. "Black" is the new "wit!"

Enjoyed the multiple tastes of chocolate, grains, rye and slight alcohol. Aftertaste seemed a little too bitter for the general composition of the beer - and was somewhat t annoying toward the finish of the 12 oz. Fragrant aroma. Poured dark brown with a light tan, thin head. Nicely done, overall.

Bottled, thanks JCW! Near black, rich head. Vinous fruity coffee aroma. Sweet and malty, very roasty with rounded mouthfeel. Theres lots of licorice as well as hints of soy sauce and chocolate. Rather bitter finish. Complex and intense, very enjoyable!

This beer is black (lest anyone worry about misleading labels) with a medium dark beige head and thin lacing. Toasted malt, chocolate and a bit of hops in the nose. Medium-bodied and nutty with lots of malt and hops flavors. The finish is dry and grassy with a nice rye aftertaste. As with most Rye beers I have tried, I enjoyed this.
