Belgian blonde with oatmeal, apparently only made for last year’s Modeste Bierfestival but the brewer, who gave me this bottle at his brewery, told me that he has plans to continue it and integrate it in his regular assortment. Cobweb-lacing, medium thick, off-white, classic moussy head, gradually showing gaps in the middle but well-retaining on the edge; lightly hazy peach blonde colour with warm, pale orange hue. Aroma of mandarin, orange peel, honey, apricot, dried ginger, lightly toasted bread, crackers, dry earth, hints of bitter wormwood, bubblegum, cooked salsify, rainwater somewhere or in any case something clearly minerally, fresh black radish, cucumber, sweet white grapes, a suspicion of coriander and, alas, a vague hint of DMS. Crisp, fruity onset, spritzy carbonation numbing the tongue a bit, minerally accents surrounding a sweetish, apricot- and lightly banana-like fruitiness with a sourish gooseberry accent. Supple, smooth mouthfeel, especially after the carbonation has receded a bit. Caramelly malt sweetness in the middle with ongoing fruit (or even lightly honeyish) sweetness, made smoother, even a bit creamy, by the oats, which have apparently been generously applied; a very light toasted bitterish touch in the end blends well with a herbal, lightly spicy and floral hop bitterness, but it is the fruit sweetness (apricot, even orange) which keeps lingering in the back of the mouth after swallowing, along with a soapy coriander flavor. Accessible, technically well done (apart from that faint DMS hint) and perhaps just a tad too sweet to my personal taste, but at the same time an interesting beer, with a pleasantly smooth, velvety mouthfeel thanks to the oats and a refreshing citrus element. Nice and a bit different within the broader, only loosely definable category of sweetish Belgian ’edelbieren’.
