Strong Ale - American Regular Out of Production
Score
7.40
ABV: 11.0% IBU: 75 Ticks: 63
My idea of a strong ale was brewed with loads of malt, hops, jaggery and a touch of manuka smoke.

It was fermented with a clean ale yeast to let the ingredients speak for themselves without getting interrupted by too many esters.
After all that it was aged for 5 months on American oak, then refermented in the bottle.

Cheers – Søren Eriksen – Brewer
Hops - Pacific Jade, Chinook
Malt - Pale Ale, Munich, Special B
Yeast - US-05
Other - Manuka Smoke, Jaggery (raw sugar) and American Oak

Bottle at Barely Legal Tasting Room . pours dark , unclear amber-red-brown . Unmentionable foam . Smell is sweet , very sweet malts ( think of an Old ale, Barley wine ) Taste is likewise . sweet, but a bit thinner than earlier mentioned styles . Also a decent amount of bitterness included . Very nice ! Carbonation is decent , low as it should be . Very nice beer ! Slightly metallic in the back , and could use more body at this ABV to be world-class , but I definetly don’t regret buying this one !

Bottle from Legacy Liquor, Vancouver
Cloudy dark ambr color with creamy head. Strong aroma of caramel with interesting notes of wood, vanilla, smoke. Full bodied; strong malt flavor, with accent of dark caramel, nuts, smoke and some vanilla; moderately sweet, correctly bitter, with a light acidity, medium astringency in the final and clear alcohol warmth; there is plenty of resiny hops.
Rich; not as complex as a Baladin X Fumé, but powerful, balanced, well brewed.

330ml bottle. Slightly cloudy, reddish, darkest copper to brown colour with average, frothy, half-way lasting, minimally lacing, off-white to beige head. Malty, Barleywine-like aroma with a nuttily touch, hints of toffee, marzipan, a touch of treacle, woodruff, a cautious smoky touch. Taste is rich and complex, oscillating, malty notes cover a range from toffee, via sweat to smoke, ham, almond, resin, raisin, accompanied by bitter hoppy overtones throughout. Full bodied, sticky palate, oily texture, rich and complex; slightly unbalanced and inharmonic, more oscillating than integrated. If I carried a positive 8 Wired prejudice with me until now, this time my thumb points downwards in case of doubt, indicated by +/- 0.1 points at any one time, forgiving at least a +0.3 better score overall. Well, I can see there is intensity, there is variety of flavours: but concerning aroma as well as taste I have to say: there’s no harmony. The (in light of better knowing often ironically used) German saying "viel hilft vielt" should be applicable here.

33 cl bottle @ home
Aroma is rather sweet, malty and somewhat boozy with caramel and resiny American hops. Also some vanilla tones. Flavour is sweet with oaky tones, caramel, some alcohol and vanilla. Finishes with harsh maltyness. Syrupy, sweet but still kind of nice. There’s even some smoky tones on some sips.

330ml bottle from Bierkompass

Pours dark reddish brown with a small head. Aroma of raisins, wood, caramel, toffee, oak and grassy hops. Taste is sweet, syrupy, caramely and woody with loads of toffee, fudge, oak and some notes of ripe fruits and grassy hops. Finish is sweet, malty and heavy with syrupy notes, ripe fruits, raisins and grassy hops. A bit stingy and unbalanced.

Bottle. Notes of oak, vanilla, clove, butter and orange. Small notes of smoke. A bit edgeless for a 11abv beer. Surprisingly easy to drink.
