My idea of a strong ale was brewed with loads of malt, hops, jaggery and a touch of manuka smoke.
It was fermented with a clean ale yeast to let the ingredients speak for themselves without getting interrupted by too many esters.
After all that it was aged for 5 months on American oak, then refermented in the bottle.

Bottle from Star Grocery in Berkeley, CA. Pours hazy dark amber with a transient beige head. Aroma is a bit medicinal. With a chocolate hint. Or is there anise? Difficult. Med + body. Flavor is strong hop - earthy/citrus, moving on to some brown sugar, then to a woody astringency, then to something really earthy. Finishes with an anise hint in the nose with each sip, but quite non-anise. I think I’m finally getting a light smoke - sort of like the liquid smoke available in stores. This is a very challenging ale to dissect. Really good tho.

33cl bottle, which is actually double bottle capped and I have never seen or even heard of this before, pours with a clear deep ruby red body that supports a light tan head. The aroma offers up sweet musty prunes and figs as well as pine nuanced caramel malts and a mineral sense at the end of the draw. There’s surprisingly little of the big 11% ABV coming through. The taste is very barleywine like with sweet malts and sticky pine hops, some caramel malts and then murmurs of cherry and prune sweet fruity esters in the background. There is a hop note in there too but I’m struggling to put words to it. There’s lingering pine hops that show up into the after taste. Like the nose the booziness is well restrained in this big big beer. Dandy sipper.

Bottle at Bruce’s new pad, thanks to Josh, 15/10/13. Lightly hazed dark amber with a moderate beige head. Nose is dark toffee, booze, brown sugars, a little harsh and raw. Taste is a little more refined encapsulating dark toffee, light spice, grain, gin notes. Full bodied, fine carbonation, drying conclusion with boozey notes. Ok affair.

Draught @ CBC 2013 [ Blue Session ]. - Copenhagen Beer Celebration 2013, Sparta Hallen, Gunnar Nu Hansens Plads 11, 2100 Copenhagen, DenmarkUnclear medium to dark amber orange colour with a large, frothy to creamy, good lacing, mostly lasting, off-white head. Aroma is moderate to heavy malty, nutty, caramel, dried fruit, moderate hoppy, orange - citrus, grass. Flavour is moderate to heavy sweet and light heavy bitter with a long duration, hoppy, caramel, dried fruit, dry. Body is medium, texture is oily, carbonation is soft. [20130504]

Bottle, many thanks to Josh. It pours deep amber with a thick yellowish-beige head. The nose is earth, toasty, caramel, toffee, honey, vanilla and wood. The taste is wood, earth, grass, toast, some astringency, decent bitterness and resin with a dry, earthy finish. Medium body, fine carbonation and slightly oily mouth-feel. Hides abv pretty well. Decent enough, if a little unexciting.

Bottle shared at Bruce’s in London - many thanks to Josh. Pours clear amber with a foamy head. Nose has caramel, bread, some pine. Medium sweet flavor, toasty grass, caramel, dried berries. Medium bodied with fine carbonation. Lightly resinous to finish, more grass, pine, some toasty bread, orange rind. Alright. (3.6)
Sampled at Copenhagen Beer Celebration 2013 - Day 2, Session 2. Pours cloudy, ruby-brown with a light, creamy head. Big and sugary with notes of pine, ripe fruits, caramel and toasted bread. Full bodied with fine carbonation. Lightly warming at the end with sticky sugars, bitter pine, alcohol and ripe orange. A bit hot and bitter. Kind of rough around the edges. (3.3)

Bottle. Extremely deep dark maroon, purple, brown color, small but thick tan head with good retention and solid lacing. Aroma of dark fruit, figs, plums, slightly burnt caramel. Taste is sweet and strong winter fruit with bitter resiny finish and substantial body. Very tasty. A big beer.

From a 330ml bottle on 25/8/2013 (batch 103, BB March 18). Pours a slightly cloudy amber with a smallish head. Has a quite a strong aroma of caramel and toffee. This one is a huge malt bomb featuring caramel, toffee, butterscotch, nuts and toast. along with curious dash of fruitiness as well. The smoke is there but it’s quite subtle. Finishes off with a pronounced, almost medicinal, hop bitterness. This comes across as a very big beer, with the 11% quite evident. The palate is quite syrupy and the carbonation moderate. Not a subtle beer by any means, but there is a hell of a lot going on with it. A very full on, complex offering, which is unsurprising from these guys.

Bottle, 14C. Clear bronze with a pale beige head that lasts well. Aroma of toffee, smokey honey, figs and other dried fruit, hazelnuts, spices, alcohol. Syrupy but with a very pleasing creaminess. Rather sweet and quite boozy, although only a little hot. Toffee, dried fruit, nuts and orange peel. Spices build and the finish is lightly smokey with spices and honey. Bitterness is fairly discreet. Not a graceful drop (maybe it will mellow) but there’s lots going on and it hangs together. 330ml is a lot of this - not that I’m getting tired of it, just that it’s a slow drinker.

Bottle - Roasted malts, some dark fruit and a little oak. Dark cloudy amber with a thin brown head. Lots of nice smoke, rich malts and oak. Big bitterness to match with a hop finish.. A great robust beer.
