This distinctive type of beer was originally brewed to withstand the abuses of shipping in foul weather to Imperial Russia. It was a favourite of Russian nobility whose taste for the finest food and drink was world famous. A rich flavourful brew; deep chocolate in colour with a roasted barley nose and flavour that is a complexity of malt, hops, alcohol and yeast. Fermented in ‘stone Yorkshire squares’.

Molto buona. c. Bottega Della Birra Arona 16.11.19

Bottle. Beautiful black with shades of brown and a lovely beige head. Aroma of butter, cookies and roasted malts. Taste of burnt malts, liquorice and a little bit of dark chocolate. Fruity and slightly tart. Low carbonation. Decent not great. Somehow Samuel Smith and me find it hard to establish a love affair.

355 ml bottle. Pours almost black with a brown foamy head. Citrus, some coffee, a bit dark chocolate, roasted malt, some rum, some clove and christmas spices. Some sourness, some bitterness and sweetness. Full bodied, soft carbonated, a bit watery though, dry bitter finish. Decent!
