This sturdy beer is strong both in taste and alcohol content (9%), boasting undeniably appealing flavours. The people of Montignies-sur-Roc, which lies to the south of Mons in the province of Hainaut, are known locally as Montagnards. It seemed perfectly natural then for a beer brewed in the village to be named La Montagnarde. Enlivened by a very sharp bouquet of fruitiness and spiciness, it has a stark taste, somewhere between intense bitterness and dreamy caramel. Absolutely sugar-free, this pure malt beer plays with a variety of flavours that soften the bitterness. There is a pepperiness at the back of the mouth and a tingling on the tongue. Its qualities continue to develop in the mouth, each element of its flavour having the chance to express itself individually. It is very active in the glass too, giving it a generous, long-lasting head. Its long finish highlights the ever-present bitterness, with a little less of the caramel. The finale evokes a kind of sugar-free gingerbread.
In 2019 the new 1979 label was introduced to commemorate the 40th jubilee of the brewery.

Bottle. Light brown beer with a strong head. The aroma is strongly mulled fruit, and the flavour is soft, fresh and fruity mulled. Overall a very good beer.

Re-rate 4/13/10: Bottle from my cellar at a tasting. Best before 08. Muddy brown with lots of floaties. Aroma of malt, caramel and dark fruits. Sweet malty fruity flavor with a bit of acidity. Medium-full body. 7/3/7/4/15=3.6

Aroma is malt, some caramel and dark fruits. Flavor is sweet with malt, spices, caramel, some dark fruits and an alcoholic edge. Some nice bitterness in the finish. Clear color, golden to amber. Malty sweet and also alcohol sweet, warming alcohol. Fruity taste with a faint acidic aftertaste. Low hops in the taste and also low bitterness. Big body and high co2 level. Great Belgian that you want more of. Nasty. For the little bit that ended up in my glass though: Hazy copper color, small yellow head (the stuff in the bottle still is VILE looking though!). Sweet, fruity, some fruits scent. Frist of this shipment that doesn’t smell horrible. Sweet, harsh grainy, sugary, alcohol taste. Smooth mouthfeel, medium sort of harsh bitterness. No way am I pouring the rest of the bottle looking like that.6/2/5/4/11=2.8

Clear copper color with tall pillowy light tan head. Big carbonation. Aroma of grains, hay, spicy hops, citrus hops and Belgium yeast. Great tasting beer. First there is spicy bitter hops then some sweet caramel malts which lead into more grainy pale malts. Next the flavor becomes sweet orange citrus mixed with yeast spiciness and brown sugar. Bottled, 0.33cl. It pours unclear, golden-brown, with floaties and a huge, lasting beige head. Quite a lot comes out of the bottle on its own. Complex aroma with tea, sugar, dried fruits, hints of roasted malt and alcohol. The flavor is sweet and maltym with dried fruits, spices and hints of alcohol. Full-bodied, and a finish with alcohol, sweetness and spices. Nice beer, but not a rave. Would like to sample it again though. (061027)

Hazy amber (golden orange) with a fine white head. Aroma and taste of yeast (malts) spice and fruits (citrus/oranges). Little sweetness. Smooth & filling texture. Medium live carbonation. Great lasting and pleasant finish. Abbaye de rocs is truly amazing. Great

Big bottle. Hazy amber, off-white creamy head. Fruity peach and oranges, caramel. Minerally yeast, a bit belgian funk. Sweet yet refreshing and not cloying - fruity finish. Medium bodied, lightfooted, sparkly mouthfeel.
