Quadrupel Ale

”Do you know what dwells in a glass?” asks Ole, in Hans Christian Andersen's The Watchman of the Tower. Better known for stories such as The Little Mermaid, Andersen wrote this short, cautionary tale for a somewhat older audience. Our quadrupel ale, also meant for the mature connoisseur, is a deep and mysterious libation, dark auburn and full-bodied, its sweetness deceptive. As Ole describes the glasses in turn, their contents become more ominous until, in the sixth glass...

Purchased this 750 ml bottle while on a trip to Dallas. Poured into my favorite snifter it yields an attractive dark red-amber body, active carbonation and an eggshell white foam going as tall as you want. The scent gives red plum, currant and a whiff of spice. A sip gives a yeasty malt, cloves, ripe dark fruit, banana. Strong and gracious. A nice mouthfeel with the plentiful effervescence. Yowza. This is fine. I am late to the quadrupel game but I am enjoying the catch up.

Bottle, many years after bottling. Pours clear mahogany, with a finger thick, creamy, off white head. Aroma is fruity yeast and roasted malts, with kandi, raisins and berries Medium body, with average carbonation. Flavour is malts with burned caramel, kandi, brown sugar and leather, as well as some alcohol and herbal notes. Ok beer, but a bit raw even after all these years...

750ml bottle. Pours a hazy red-brown with sediment floating around and a large, frothy, long lasting, beige head that laces. Sweet aroma of caramel malt, prune, raisin, spice, alcohol and yeast. Sweet flavour of overripe fruit, caramel malt, spice and warming alcohol in a dry, mildly bitter finish. Medium to full body with an oily texture and soft carbonation. Very nice.

$3.10 bottle from Wine Warehouse. Pours hazy brownish-red with a large orange-tinted beige bead. Aroma is black cherry, banana, yeast, bubblegum, raisin, and grass. Flavor is very similar with a hell of a bite at the end! Bitter cherry, bubblegum, yeast, raisin, grass, apple, toffee, glue, and alcohol. Nice.
