It is golden in colour, and succeeds remarkably in blending mellowness and bitterness.

The Chimay Triple, which is the brewery’s most recent creation, is labelled “Cinq Cents” in 75 cl bottles. It was introduced in 1986 on the occasion of five hundred years of the principality of Chimay. It is the youngest of the Chimay beers.

Bottle at home in Hackney - picked up from the big local Tesco. Pours faintly hazed yellow-gold with a huge, billowing white froth of a head. Moderately sweet, some fresh pale grains, a decent hit of booze, mellow yeast, citrus peel, wheat flakes. Medium bodied with lively, massaging carbonation. Warming finish, a little grassy bitterness, husky pale grain, yeast, alcohol, soft esters. Quite enjoyable.

Bottle to glass. A bit of a gusher. Aroma of earthiness and spicy esters. Pours slightly hazed dark golden with full white head of tiny bubbles. Flavor is spicy esters and a bit of funk Malty finish. Alcohol warming present through the back half of the palate.

Bottle from my local off-licence ‘Wine Rack’. Pours a murky orange/peach colour with a huge thick creamy white head. Aromas of bananas and cloves, white bread, peppery spice, apricot and floral. Taste has more of the apricot, floral and peppery spice coming through with a nice hoppy bitterness on the finish. Full body with a soft fiz mouthfeel. More bitterness than i expect from a Tripel but still very nice. Excellent.

330ml bottle purchased from the Offie and drunk at home. Dark gold and clear with a large and quickly dissipating white head. Spicy, bready aroma with light notes of banana and ripe citrus peel. Medicinal bitterness cuts the sweet, yeasty taste for a rounded balanced finish. Full body with heavy carbonation. Really nice beer, it’s taken me ages to rate it for some reason.

Bottle from Tescos. Amber pour with a white head. Nose is pear drops, white bread, banana, sultanas. Taste is exceedingly similar to the above with some sweet spice notes coming through. Oodles of spicy hop coming through in the close.
