Traditional winter seasonals are warm and comforting - not this Penguin. Diving in at around 10 percent alcohol by volume, Killer Penguin uses over twice the malt as other winter beers, and is aged for over 6 months to perfect the condition and flavor of this barleywine style ale. This beer doesn't ferment, it hibernates, and wakes up with an attitude.

Moss, cherries, and raspberries on the nose, not strong. Clear copper, medium yellow head. Malty fig and cherry flavor. Dried leaves come and go. Traces of vanilla. Finish is quite bitter. Medium body, alcohol appropriate. Bitter without comparable character. Not one of the better barleywines.

22oz bottle from Westroads poured into a Snifter. 2010 version, label says best before January 31st 2012. Pours a beautiful tawny red with almost no head. Aroma is sweet with fermented fruit and some slight pine hops. Taste starts lightly sweet and ends medium bitter. Taste of fermented fruit and much more noticeable pine. Slight taste of oak wood chips. Medium bodied with a thick yet slick texture. Soft carbonation and a long bittersweet finish. Overall, this is a damn good beer. I can’t wait until this years version comes out so I can compare.

Sampled from a 22 oz brown bottle this beer poured a red-orange color with a large beige head. The aroma was sweet port wine, brown sugar, ripe fruits and pineapple. The flavor was sweet and tangy candied fruits with notes of caramel and brown sugar and light undertones of nut and fruity hops. The finish was medium length sweet caramel and fruit. Full and smooth body. Alcohol was well hidden. Very good.

Pours orange bronze into a snifter. Creamy head quickly recedes to skim surface. Grassy perfume aromas. Slick and sweet with upfront sour fruit and a sweet, lasting caramel finish.

Bottle. A clear copper/bronzish color with a thin off white head. Aroma is full of yeast, barley and malt with a sweetish undertone. Flavor is full of malts and barley. Quite thin and light for a barley wine.
