Traditional winter seasonals are warm and comforting - not this Penguin. Diving in at around 10 percent alcohol by volume, Killer Penguin uses over twice the malt as other winter beers, and is aged for over 6 months to perfect the condition and flavor of this barleywine style ale. This beer doesn't ferment, it hibernates, and wakes up with an attitude.

2007 bottle. Pours copper, beige head. Aroma was heavily malty and sugary. Taste, sweet, caramel, brown sugar, dark fruits, malts with some light roastiness. Light apple finish, overall mouthfeel has plenty of warming alcohol.

07Killer Penguin BW-22oz bottle-pours a foamy to rocky tan head that laces and copper/ruby red color. Aroma is nicely balanced medium malt-caramel, pine hops and dark fruit. Taste is nicely balanced sweet medium malt-caramel/roasty, pine/citrus-orange hops and dark fruit, some alcohol. Taste not quite up to aroma.

2008 Vintage bomber, ordered at Old Chicagos in Overland Park, Kansas. Pour is ruby brown golden, with some nice settling and a one inch tan head. Nice lacing as the head falls. Aroma of caramel sweet maltiness and bright pine resin hop. Nice balance, though it is certainly more malt than hop. Taste is caramel malt orange sweetness and piney hops. The resin from the nose carries over to the taste. Nice balance of flavors in this one, though nothing great about the malt or hop. Not totaly refined, but not unpleasant. Overall decent enough Barley Wine.

Bottled. An amber beer with a lazing beige head. The aroma is sweet malty with notes of caramel and fruit. The flavor is sweet malty with notes of both fresh and over ripe fruits. The sweetness makes it a bit cloying. Thanks Papsoe for sharing.

2007 bomber from Uber and Enniskillen! Nose of caramel, fig newtons, and a flowery hop note; hazy rusty brown with a small beige head; flavor is light hop bitterness, brown sugar, and prunes and raisins; finish is slight brown sugar and hop bitterness. Decently good BW!

Pour is a dark brown with a small tan head. Aroma is just the right amount of hops and malts with some brown sugar and molasses. Flavor is a nice caramel malt with the nice hops ad on. Maybe a touch watery in the end for a decent barley wine but this is quite tasty and something to find.

2007 bottle. Warm roasted caramel aroma with some alcohol and raisin. Dark copper red color with a white head that quickly ringed. Medium to full body with creamy carbonation. Roasted dark malt with heat and dark fruit. Very smooth and tasty. Finish is a bit sweet and there’s not a great deal of bitter. One heck of a good drink though.

(Bottle 65 cl) Courtesy of markgugs. Clear, amber golden with a dense, shaving foam-style like head. Aroma of overripe fruit and sherry. The body is surprisingly only medium with a little caramel and overripe fruit in there. Discreetly bitter. Fairly average Barley Wine. 191207

bottle - Pours coppery with a thin head. It smells very malty with a little alcohol. Caramel sweetness and some moderate hops balance okay in the flavor that’s joined by a touch of dark fruit. Overall it seems to lack depth. It’s definitely a barley wine and tastes pretty good, but it’s just not very interesting.
