Sampled at Borefts 2019. Hazy dull brown with beige head. Light glue, sour berries, oxidized old malts, vanilla, cinnamon, oak. Chemical burns in my mouth. Quite deep sour, under medium sour and bitter. Medium bodied. Feels like there’s a burning chemical Boris Johnson substance in here. Weird.

Borefts '19, day 1. Fairly hazy brown with a barely any head. Aroma is lactic, chemical, light funky and tart fruit. Burning sour in the flavor, way to much. Medium bodied with soft carbonation.

Damn, this is REALLY sour. It almost hurts. No wait, it does hurt, but it's also so yummy. Sour, sharp, sour, cherries, sour, Morpheus, sour, peach, sour and wood. With some more sourness. Fruity and so ridiculously sour. Awesome!

On tap at the Small Bar, Bristol 15/9/2017. Deep brown, with a thin, off-white, head. A mouth puckeringly sour beer, with vinous notes and a hint of fruit. Too extreme for me.

Bottle. Dark brown color. Dried berryfruit, caramel, hint of metal in the aroma. Sour, vinous flavor with caramel, some berry fruit and just a hint of rest sweetness.

The fifth one in a series of Brexit-themed Alvinne sours, something they got quite some media attention for - and the more attention this fabulous brewery receives, the better, even if it is due to a political theme... In this European sour ale, a description implicitly referring to Alvinne's viewpoint on the theme I guess, they apparently couldn't decide on the blend - and knowing their ways, it is very well possible that they did not even keep track of which of their barrel-aged sours actually went in here and at which proportions. It is not mentioned on the label, but I have developed a deep trust in this brewery's blending skills so I suppose we should not worry about that too much anyway. Pale beige, very loose bubbles appear during pouring and with a bit of forcing, a wafer-thin and incomplete ring is the only form of a head attainable here; this lack of head formation is made up for by the beautiful, 'autumny', deep dark bronze robe of the beer, with burgundy edges reminiscent of a very old red wine. Powerful, complex and ever-shifting bouquet of balsamic and red wine vinegar, candied cherries, forest mushrooms frying in walnut oil, plum wine, redcurrant juice, sawdust and worn-out old wood, nut bread, very old madera, fresh dates, rhubarb chutney, grape seeds, faint and volatile hints of gingerbread, ripe pear, almond, stewed cardamom seeds as in an Indian curry, gravy and varnish. Quite intense onset, lots of seemingly sweet fruitiness (blackberries, pear, dates, jostaberries) very quickly drenched in a burning, vinegary acidity, spreading out over the palate with an astringent effect; carbonation, as expected based on the lack of head, remains very, very soft. Somewhat astringent mouthfeel initially mostly due to that vinegary sourness, but afterwards more so by a very strong tannic woodiness, as if biting on a piece of old wood; in between, however, a softening, soothing, rounded maltiness builds up, bready and a tad toffeeish, lacking in any bitterness but carrying forward a light, almost vaguely gravy-like umami touch. The acidity burn and the astringent tannic effect strongly dry the finish along with gentle earthy and dusty notes, spicy accents (rosemary- and cardamom-like but only very vaguely so and going all but lost in the acidity) and lingering red fruit and sour berry effects. Alvinne has gotten weirder and weirder in recent years and this is certainly an embodiment of their current house style, arty and inaccessible for sure, but with an aroma that belongs to the most complex, enticing and enchanting fragrances I ever had the joy of smelling in any beer. The acetic sourness - likely due to Acetobacter lurking in the crevices of the wooden barrels - could be a bit less sharp for me, this almost feels like drinking a glass of sherry or balsamic vinegar, but then there is this rotund, sweet, toffeeish malt element too, adding a bit of softness under all the sourness. One of Alvinne's sourest I had to date, if it were a tad less vinegary and more easily drinkable I would have given it a much higher rating, but as said, the aroma is out of this world even after having sniffed many thousands of beers, including over a hundred Alvinne ones. Wry and sour like that whole Brexit affair itself, they could not have expressed their feelings about it more elegantly than in this beer.
