Pilgrim's Dole is a barleywine-style ale made with fifty percent wheat malt, or what we at New Holland call a wheatwine. Pilgrim's Dole blends warming and slightly sweet flavors with a unique caramelized character. Rich, malty body with unique caramelized character and hints of raisins, nuts and figs. Pairings: fruit crisps, creme brulee, salted caramels, slow-roasted meats.

22oz bottle with sceen printing older vintage thanks to toby. Pours out copper topped with a small sand head. Aroma of pit fruit caramel malts toffee and a little hop. Taste is as the aroma with caramel malts leading the way some pit fruit still hanging on. A little of the hop bitterness on the end. This one was still holding up very well.

Bottle. Prune, malt and alcohol aroma. Orange-brown with small head. Sweet raisin/prune, orange, barley malt and alcohol flavor. Nice body. Tasty.

Bottle as shown. Pours a clear amber with a medium beige head. The aroma is oak and vanilla. Thin mouthfeel with light roasted malt and nice oak finish. A good barey wine from New Holland.

Bottle pour to snifter. Copper-amber color. Taste is heavy on the sweet malt with raisin and caramel aftertaste; an alcohol kick. It’s okay but I think it might improve with some aging.

22oz bottle poured into a snifter. Pours a lightly hazy dark ruby with a small bit of white head. Aroma is kinda boozy. Dark fermented fruit, caramel, bread and a little oaky bourbon. Taste is medium bitter and light sweet. Lots of warming alcohol with dark fruit, caramel, bourbon oak and a little hop bitterness. Full bodied with a thick texture. Lively carbonation and a long finish. Overall, not bad. I wish I would have had this when it was a little colder outside, because it is definitely warming me up.

Rich grain and caramel aroma, grapenuts, and peanuts. Cloudy ochre, thin head. Much more grainy and drier on the palate. Slightly boozy and watery. Certainly a more malt forward barleywine with no wheat character and not terribly well done.

Bottle: Poured a clear deep amber color ale with a small foamy head with some light retention and some light lacing. Aroma of really sweet caramelized malt and light toffee notes. Taste is dominated by overly sweet caramelized malt with some toffee notes. Body is slightly above average with good carbonation and alcohol not too apparent. I always liked the idea of wheat wine but this example is way too sweet for my tastebuds.

Pours a satisfying amber-red with haze and a lasting head. That rhymed! The nose is pure malt sweetness and depth, without the hoppy twang of most American Barleywines. But, then again, this bottle is a Wheatwine, which means god knows what. The taste smacks you with brown sugar, honey, and a salty, bloodlike undercurrent. Yet the flavors never really go anywhere from this initial sweetness; the malts loiter until they grow saccharine and boring. Serious liquor burn on the finish means this beer needs much more time on the shelf than the year I’ve given it. (4/25/09)

Bottle shared at Maltzilla’s All American Weekend. Pours dark reddish brown color with tan head. Aromas of caramel and dark fruits. Sweet caramel and toffee flavors with some raisins and dates. Medium to full body with average carbonation.

Draft at Alchemy. Deep brown-burgundy color. Thick beige head. Odd deep caramel aroma, pretty brutal. Deep fruity nuances, along the lines of a British Barleywine or Old Ale more than a hop-forward US version. Caramel and dark fruit dominate the taste, some soapy hops attempt to balance it otu and fail. Doesn’t hide the ABV well, but it was listed as 10% at the bar, not 11.4%, so that would make it a little more forgivable. Deep and sweet, it mellows a little and begins to grow on you more and more. Not sticky or cloying, pleasantly mellow carbonation. Worth a try.
