375mL bottle, pours a cloudy orange with a small white head. Aroma brings out a wonderful barnyard funk, with an old, wet woody character, and light champagne-like effervescence. Flavour has a sort of orange marmalade character that melds with the classic barnyard funk, ending on a nice champagne-like effervescence. Less horse blanket-like than some of the other VAT blends. Finishes with funk and orange marmalade. Excellent.

Bottle. Last of the new 4-pack VAT Geuzes. Color: Slightly hazy orangish golden, white head. Aroma: Hay, tart berries, vinuous, funky hints. Taste: Moderate tart, very vinuous, fruity green apple, berries and citrus, some horseblanket funk, a lot of oak wood, vanilla and some caramel and hay. Some old hop at the background. Quite a lot of tannins, very dry finish. Medium body, just below average carbonation. Nice complexity. Another very nice Boon VAT mono blend, just like the other ones. Gonna get me another package in near future for sure.

0.375 l bottle from 'Het Huis van de Geuze', bottled in April 2021. A little hazy, deep amber with a medium large, foamy, slowly diminishing, white head. Slightly sweetish, sourish, very fruity, rather vinous a bit funky aroma of overripe lemon, red wine, oak, gooseberry, light horse blanket and a touch of vanilla indeed. Slightly sweet, gently sour, very fruity, gently vinous and slightly funky taste of overripe lemon, red wine, gooseberry, oak, some horse blanket, a touch of szechuan pepper and light leather, followed by a medium long, gently tart, fairly woody-dry finish. Medium body, slightly astringent, quite smooth and fairly effervescent mouthfeel, average to lively carbonation. Lovely Geuze again from Boon, absolutely digging their monoblends. Unfortunately, there's only one left in my cellar.

One of four new Boon Monoblends released for this year's Toer de Geuze, after more than a year of bottle conditioning; the 'foeder' involved here has been used by Boon since 2005 and used to contain French red wine before that. Opens with a popping sound and 'gun smoke' the way it ought to be. Thick and fluffy, egg-white, irregularly edged but dense and very stable head on a misty deep and warm orangey-tinged 'old golden' robe with a storm of swirling sparkling rushing through. Aroma of unripe yellow plums, green gooseberry, Granny Smith apple, sour grapes, dusty attic, old dry oak wood, dried mugwort, straw, old lemon peel, black radish peel, that typical background chlorine hint many old Boon lambics show, very volatile vanilla faraway. Crisp, refreshingly sour onset, lemony but not too harshly puckering, lots of green sour fruit (green gooseberries and green apples) as well as unripe stonefruit astringency, very actively carbonated (lambrusco-like) with 'crystalline' effect as befits any geuze; full body, dry bread crust-like core buried under loads of tart fruitiness, varying between ongoing green apple and unripe plum to sour grape, with even a brief touch of nectarine at the back. Strong lactic sourness runs through the whole, as do powerful woody tannins, accentuating this deep wryness, but the fruity esters and more 'volatile' acids keep things playful and lively. Adding to the grape skin and unripe stonefruit acidity as well as the woodiness is a deep but outspoken 'old hops' bitterness, with an earthy but also rooty, even somewhat bitter weed-like character, seemingly a bit more outspoken and longer-stretched than usual in Boon geuzes; and indeed, as the brewery explains, a certain vinosity is to be found in the finish, in the form of a subtle effect of very dry wine or cava, an effect reinforced by a warming afterglow of somewhat gin-like alcohol. Another excellent Monoblend and quite an 'extroverted' one, with strong amounts of bitterness, tannic astringency and crisp green fruitiness. As usual with this kind of beers, I wonder how it will evolve in a few years from now - and also as usual, I did not have the patience to wait.
