Decoction-mashed Czech-style Dark Lager
Tmavé Pivo is the sort of beer brewers get excited about. An obscure lager style that kinda only gets made in one place? Sign us up! Tmavé Pivo, essentially“dark beer” in Czech, is the Bohemian cousin to German Schwarzbier. Malty, round, with some dark malt flavor but none of the acrid roast character one might find in a stout, Tmavé Pivo is everything we want dark lager to be. Our version of this classic is decoction-mashed for extra malt intangibles, and is balanced out by an addition of spicy, herbal Kazbek hops. Honestly, y’all, this is the sort of beer we’d brew all the time if we could.

Can from Livonia Liquor. Pours a dark brown to black with a full 3 fingers of beige, fluffy head that lingers. Coffee and chocolate on the nose with some light toasted caramel as it warms. Smooth and well-rounded on the mouth. Easy drinking, with a mild dark chocolate malt finish.

Pint can from Woodman's Appleton, 4/23/22. Dark brown, large frothy brown head, good retention. Aroma of roast, nuts, smoke. Taste in nuts, roast, cherry, smoke. Crisp, well balanced, mild lingering bitterness. Nice.

The aromas are clean roast and dark malt. Flavors are very much like nose, slightly more sweet than bitter with good carbonation and body. Finish follows flavors. Reminds me of the dark lagers that I had in Czech Republic. Nice dark beer.

On tap at the brewery. Pours a near clear dark brown with a light tan head that dissipates to the edges and laces. Aroma has a nice roast, light chocolate and dark grain with a bit of a crispness underlying. Flavor has a really nice light bread, chocolate and grain note with a bit of crispness and a touch of roast I. The finish.
