Just like cheap horror movies have ruined the Rottweiler’s reputation, have cheap and strong lagers ruined the name of double bock. But just as every dog-person knows, the Rottweiler is a big-hearted and loyal companion, every beer enthusiast knows that double bock beer has a dignified history.
This strong, malty and sweetish beer was the „liquid bread“ that got the monks in the old days to survive the Lent happily. Carried by the theme of bread, this beer is rich in rye malt.

Bottle from Speciaalbierpakket. Aroma is dried dark fruit, caramel malt, raisins, sturdy rye, dark bread, and berries. Flavour is medium sweet with a fairly bitter finish. Body is medium. A robustly malty Doppelbock, pretty good.

33cl bottle from Rimi, Tallinn. Pours clear brown with a moderate, off-white to beige head. Malty and caramelly aroma with some roasty notes and hints of spices and rye bread. Sweet and malty with a lightly bitter finish. Certaily decent, but too sweet for me.

Bottle. Pours dark reddish brown, some beige foam on top. Piles of sweet dried dark fruits in the nose, plums, figs, you name it. its of caramel, some bread soup and rye spices here as well. Very nice actually. First sip brings out some roasted rye bread, sweet dark fruits again, actually very pleasant and sturdy beer. Nice happiness to it as well, feels well integrated and maybe mellowed down bit. Surprise.

(Bottle, 0.33 l - BB 30.03.19, at J.R.Schrammi Keller, 20170731) The beer poured deep reddish brown and clear. Its head was medium sized and white. Aroma had malts, caramel and molasses. Palate was full bodied with medium carbonation. Flavours were molasses, caramel, toasted malts, grass and bitterness. Aftertaste had molasses, malts and bitterness. A solid doppelbock. You can find weaker ones from Germany.
