German Pilsner

Straight from up country we bring you De Gens. De Gens is a hop-accentuated German Style Pilsner with light lemon, pale honey sweetness and a crisp toasted bread, graham cracker-like malt character that deftly balances the dry-hopped treatment of Hallertau Mittlefrüh and Callista.

Can from Livonia Liquor. Pours a clearish gold with a full finger of white foam. Great lacing down the glass. Lovely aromas of cantaloupe, watermelon rind and tangerine. Crisp and clean on the palate with more watermelon rind. Lingering melon rind, grass and light herbal notes. Very crushable.

Clear golden and peach coloured body with a thinnish, one to two centimetre tall off-white head that fades fairly quickly and just leaves a small lace on top, but not on the sides of the glass. Aroma of crisp grain, cleanser, light grass and a bitter, pungent metallic and funky scent that comes from the lager yeasts and a deep bready scent as well. Light-bodied; Strong herbal and very grassy notes dominate with a biscuity and floral bite with some yeast, malt and grainy flavours along with a softer caramelised sugar and caster sugar sweetness with a good deal of nuts, earth and even some light citrus notes that add to the complexity from the relatively straight-forward tastes. Aftertaste shows the crisp malt, pungent metallic and astringency with some nice sweetness and a deep lager yeast note that shows some grainy notes throughout. Overall, a relatively nice and deep lager with a lot of pungency and stronger yeast and metallic, astringent notes, but still fairly smooth and easy-going for a lager. I sampled this sixteen ounce, pint-sized can, purchased from Whole Foods in Arlington (Pentagon City), Virginia on 12-October-2020 for US$2,99 sampled at my house here in Washington on 15-October-2020, just three days later.

Can. Pours a clear yellow with a slight gold hue and a white head that dissipates to the edges. Aroma has grass and straw notes with a bit of hay and toast supporting. Flavor has some sweet grains, a growing grass and a bit of toast in the finish.

Pretty solid pilsner. Definitely a lot of crisp noble hops here. Pours golden without much lacing and a little head. Crisp finish. Tap at Alexandria location.
