Tenth Anniversary Series 06
"The dog that doesn’t bark bites hardest..."
(from label)
Barnacles English-style Barleywine is the sixth release in the Reuben’s Brews 10th Anniversary Collaboration Series, brewed with our friend and brewing legend Alan Sprints of Hair of the Dog Brewery. We have a lot to thank Alan for but one of the most memorable occasions was in October 2012. Our brewery had only been open for business for two months and we were planning our very first bourbon-barrel imperial stout (to be released in 2013 as the first BBIS!) We didn’t know where we could get a bourbon barrel, but Alan came to our rescue, giving us two barrels from Hair of the Dog’s stash that Adam picked up in his truck.
It is a great honor to brew with Alan, particularly this style of beer that is special for each of us. If you haven’t heard, Alan is retiring this year and winding down the Hair of the Dog Brewery. We thank Alan for all of his leadership and inspiration in the craft beer world, both here in the Pacific Northwest and truly around the world.

On tap at Reuben's, pours a cloudy muddled amber with a small beige head. Aroma brings out rich bourbon barrels, toffee, toasted caramel, and bready malt. Flavour is complex and boozy, with a huge bourbon and boozy character, toffee, caramel and bready malt. Lots of barrel and huge malt finish. A bit rough but well-made. Very good.

Can, tasting at Ryan's
Hazy amber colour, with floating particles. Light smell of cleaning product. Full bodied; oily mouthfeel, sweet, the alcohol is upfront; toffee, strong bitterness, the non-understanding of what an English Barley Wine is; more booze in the finish.
Messy.

Hazy amber. Thick head. Headsy bubblegum aroma. Some pears as well. The beer is a bit like pear syrup, quite boozy, and then there's bubblegum. This one's just straight up lost the plot...all these off notes I have no idea what the beer is supposed to be about. Just a huge miss for me.

16oz @ Ryan's. Appearance: copper with a tan head. Aroma: sweet, nice fruity caramel. Taste: along the same lines, finishes with lots of hops and noticeable bitterness. Overall: pretty good, but this is definitely NOT AN ENGLISH STYLE BARLEYWINE.

Draft pour enjoyed at Reubens, followed by a can later on. Rating the draft from backlog. Clean copper pour, with a patchy foam. Sticky lacing. Layered aroma and matching flavor of caramel, toffee. Pretty boozy throughout, but not too surprised at this element. Slight metallic on the palate. Long lasting bold caramel malt finish. Big, flavorful barleywine here. Fun collab.

Pint can. Pours a copper orange color with a large sandy head. Nose is quite sweet.. caramel, toffee, fruity esters, banana, and faint wood. Tastes fairly sweet overall with light earthy notes. Some modest bitterness in the finish. More toffee, candied fruit, and brown sugar.

Annie still at a friend's house. Still not in Austin yet. Super caramel delicious English barleywine. Wish I could have visited hair of the dog at some point 😢

Re-rate: Poured from 473mL can. Hazy copper orange with small off white head and a touch of sediment. Woody oak, caramel and toffee malt, booze is still there but seems to have subdued slightly since first tasting it, could use a touch more cohesion. (-0.1 for appearance). July 11, 2022 (8/4/8/4/15=3.9): Poured from the tap @ Chuck's Hop Shop Greenwood. Clear-ish copper with small white head. Tons of toffee, caramel malt, very light hopping, perhaps a touch too boozy.

16oz can from Brewers Haven. Copper colored pour, wispy head. Aroma is butterscotch, boozy, sweet. Taste is toffee, butterscotch, malty accompanied by a healthy burn. Deep.
