Black IPA by this young and innovative craft brewery in the city of Antwerp, located in the Oudaan in the southern half of the city centre. From tap at Dok Brewing Company. Moussy, yellowish beige, stable, shred-lacing head, jet black robe. Aroma of coffee filters, dried thyme, burnt blackcurrants, pine resin, cigar ashes, cheese rind, wet leather, dried elderberries, black tea, salmiak, something ‘dusty’. Cleanly dried-fruity onset, dried blackberries and figs but subtly so, fizzy carb (perhaps a tad much for the style but still acceptable), oily body; dryish, full toasted bread-like dark maltiness shifting to full-fledged roasted chicory bitterness and ‘blackness’, hopped with herbal, eventually peppery and even piney hoppiness, adding aspects of tea, dried juniper berries, wet tobacco, spruce and bergamot as well as an aspect of dried grapefruit peel. Some light juiciness is retained in the finish, but the attention cleverly shifts from malts to hops, as it ought to be in a Cascadian dark ale. Contrary to many other attempts at this genre I had in the past years from all over Europe, this one manages not only to convey enough hoppiness to justify the ‘IPA’ part, it also adds certain ‘side aromas’ I was not expecting, but which do fit well into the whole. Quite exemplary and inviting to get to know more about this brewing project.

Black with thin head. Nice mix of malt and fresh green hops. Full. Slightly creamy too, rich mouthfeel.
