A strong malty ale that has mellow roast tones. Slightly nutty and fruity with a warming aftertaste. Before his death at Trafalgar, Nelson was already a national hero. Trafalgar was the greatest sea battle of all time involving the Spanish, French and British Fleets. Victorious but at the cost of his life Admiral Nelsons body was returned to England for a State Funeral involving a long sea passage. It is believed his body was preserved in a cask of Brandy and the crew during the dark hours crept out and drank from the cask praying they would inherit his traits.

Cask at the William Webb Ellis (JDW), Twickenham - 30/09/12. Lightly hazed amber brown with a medium sized white head. Malty nose, dark toffee and a whiff of smoke. Toffee in the taste also, caramel malt, biscuit, a litte peppery. Medium bodied with moderate carbonation leading to a bitter finish.

Red brown colour. Flavour has a woody edge. Also slightly vinous and fruity. Disappointingly thin considering the 6% alcohol. I thought it would be thicker and richer.

Gravity cask at the Alma. Pours a clear, golden-brown with a slight, filmy white head. Malty, sugary nose with some ripe fruits. Lightly sweet flavor, some toast, hints of caramel. Medium in body with soft carbonation. A bit of sugar and more light toasted malts to close. Kind of bland.

Bottle from Mr Lawrence Wine Merchants, Brockley. pours a copper/brown colour with no head. Low carbonation. Sour nose with aromas of bitter chocolate, sour cherries, malts. Sourness on the palate also. Flavours of over ripe cherries, some smoke, vinous. Finish is malty, sweet and very unexciting. This is more like the sort of stuff my brother-in-law made with his homebrew kits back in the 90’s, drinkable but only just.

Bottle at home ... Thanks to Fin for this one... copper colour with a bit to much fizz ... fruity sour nose ... its on the turn as many live bottles all too often are ... interesingly its got a blood metalic tinge, slight sourness and vinegarness... fair bit of fruit... drinkable and palatable but id not want a 2nd like this.

Bottle, from the Dodgy Deli’, Cowley Road, Oxford 31-12-07 had this 01-01-08 Poured copper colour, fruity slightly sour nose. Harry Flashman (see rating below) is spot on it is just about drinkable, fruity malty, slightly sour bloody mess if truth be known, hardly notice that it’s 6%, not great. A Barley Wine, never, it’s barely a beer.

Cask at The Admiral Hardy, Greenwich. Served in a wine glass. Aroma of smoky fruit? Almost opaque brown color with orange/ruby hilites. Beautiful. Persisting beige head. Full mouthfeel. Starts with ripe stone fruit and underlying earthy hop. Malt comes on, but well balanced by bitter. Very smooth. Resembles port in body. Some port! Beefy comes to mind. Fantastic.
