Danish Gose of sorts flavoured with pineapple, tomatillo, lime, coriander and chili, inspired by Mexican ‘salsa verde’ (taco sauce) – nothing is too far-fetched for the present-day craft beer hipster. At Mikkeller & Friends in Copenhagen, thanks to my girlfriend for sharing. Thinnish and open, snow white, edge-retaining small head on a hazy deep orangey-peach coloured beer showing strings of fine sparkling here and there. Luscious and very ‘unbeery’ but nevertheless intriguing aroma of tomatillo (a fruit actually used here it seems – with a flavour that reminds me of the somewhat related and perhaps more familiar tamarillo), cilantro, salted lime, clear ripe pineapple, Piña Colada, gazpacho, kefir, coconut, pomelo, raw red bell pepper, Thai noodle soup with kaffir lime leaves, paprika-flavoured crisps, persimmon. Fruity onset in a sourish, ‘greenish’ way, the tomatillo no doubt, reminiscent again of tamarillo but also bell pepper, cucumber and sundried tomato, an umami-ish main aspect slightly more subtly flanked by sweet and juicy pineapple, all covering the tartness that silently lurks underneath; softish carb, slick body. A cereally core, hardly malty in taste, runs under all this fruitiness, with a pinch of saltiness on the sides and soft lactic sourness covered by the tomatillo and pineapple flavours; cilantro (coriander leaf) becomes increasingly important in the finish, where it adds fraîcheur and sultry Asian flair. A spicy aspect does appear in the end but hardly chili-like so this element could have been played out more strongly for me; in any case the whole does end spicy in a more generic way, with salty, green-fruity, sweet and sour flavours all continuing. Among the most gimmicky and unbeery Goses I ever had, a very odd construction to be still called ‘beer’, more like a hearty exotic cocktail of sorts – but strangely everything worked well together for me, so I cannot say I did not like it… Highly original, and I suspect the presence of all main flavours except for bitter is what makes it ring. I would happily drink this again, but only on a hot summer afternoon.
