Brewed in collaboration with our good friends at Unity Brewing Co, this special bitter takes cues from contemporary brewing, but with it’s roots in the classics. Pouring a deep golden colour with rich biscuit and caramel notes from a blend of seven specialty malts, we’ve added Idaho 7 hops in the whirlpool for hints of tropics and grapefruit.

440ml can from Unity. Poured a crystal clear medium amber colour with a short-lived, frothy white head. The aroma is malt, light caramel. The flavour is moderate sweet light bitter, with a smooth, malt, earthy, dry sugary, toffee caramel, light woody hop bitter palate. Medium bodied with average to soft carbonation. Nice, but somewhat sweet for an ESB.

Can bought at Grumpy Goat, Reading. No dimpled pint glasd at hand so a JW Lees glass will have to suffice. Aroma had relatively low key caramel malts and a sour berry edge. Cloudy opaque toffee brown. Thin off-white head is soon pretty much nothing but a memory. Ermm... so... they've kinda amplified what I'd expect from a Special Bitter - initial ligh-medium bitterness with a sour berry edge, followed by caramel. But it's big dirty salted caramel. Very sweet but with added gravy. Medium bodied. Oily. Flat-fizzy carbonation. Long finish, a tad dry, a tad astringent. Not completely convinced. The flavours jarr.
