(Can, 0.44l - canned on 02.11.2022 - BB 02.08.2023, at Pien Shop, 20230106) The beer poured black. Its head was medium sized and lightly brown. Aroma had burnt malts, resin and citric notes. Palate was medium bodied with medium carbonation. Flavours were burnt malts, resin, fruitiness, ash and bitterness. Aftertaste was burnt, hoppy and bitter. A tasty hoppy brew with burnt notes.

440ml can. Juicy and fruity with some pine, mild roastiness, hints of fruity coffee, some very mild bitterness. Interesting, quite soft black ipa, but could've used a bit more of roastiness and bitterness to make this awesome

Black IPA brewed at Protokoll in Berlin by representatives of Bilie’s Bier Kafétaria, the hugely successful beer pub (and gastro bar) in Antwerp. Cheers to Lieve, one of the long-time employees there and apparently responsible for the creation of this beer, along with Yvonne (another female employee there but one I have not met). Thick and frothy, cobweb-lacing, creamy, pale yellowish beige head on an effectively black beer. Very classic BIPA aroma: burnt toast, unsugared black chocolate, wormwood, toasted onion, pine resin, grapefruit peel, roasted walnuts, coffee grounds, black peppercorns, black olives, cigar tobacco leaves. Clean onset, some restrained old raisin sweetishness and some dried fig, sharpish minerally carb but fitting well in a full, oily body; roasted-walnutty, black-toasty and marmite-like ‘black’ maltiness, stout-like as it ought to be – and then, at just the right moment, tilting towards strong, ‘old school’, wormwoody, piney and leafy hop bitterness, blending with the roasted black coffee-like bitterness and extending the finish considerably – while releasing retronasal notes of dried grapefruit peel, cigar tobacco and black pepper. You do not very often get black IPAs like this: in my experience, many of them, certainly those made in Europe by contemporary craft breweries, seem to remain stuck in a stout- or porter-like profile and do not carry enough (New World) hoppiness to justify the ‘BIPA’ label. This one, however, does it exactly right, and is among the best European beers in this style I had in a long time. Both ladies need to be sent to Berlin much more often to create beers for Billie’s!
