Deadlift Imperial IPA is unlike any Imperial IPA you’ve ever lifted from the beer aisle. It has the strong hop flavor you’d expect from an Imperial IPA but no heaviness that could weigh down your desire to take another sip. The unique flavor stems in part from Nelson Sauvin hops imported from New Zealand. Deadlift’s other component, a simple but fully braced malt backbone muscles up enough malty sweetness and caramel character to spot the incredibly robust hop flavor and aroma.
Deadlift Imperial IPA uses Nelson Sauvin hops from New Zealand’s best hop growing region: South Island’s Nelson. This region produces some of the most flavorful hops found anywhere. These hops have an intense citrus, fruity, berry-like aroma and flavor that makes them unique. The result will surely be a welcome workout for your taste buds.

On draft at Pies and PInts Charleston called Widmer Nelson Imperial IPA. Pours pale yellow with small white head that dissapates fairly quickly. Little lacing, medium body, and hop aroma. Taste is grapefruit and some pine. This is good, alcohol is well covered.

Harris Teeter, DC 4-pack ($7): Pours an orange color with a beige head. Aroma is citrusy, but there is some pine and the like in there as well. Hop flavors are pretty well done; hops are not particularly bitter, but are intense in their own way. They leave a mild aftertaste. Like some dIPAs, this one is a bit on the sweet side and leaves a sort of syrupy feeling in the mouth. That being said, this is a perfectly good beer for a very good price.

bottle - Pours clear gold with a small, lingering white head. It has a citrus hops aroma that’s a bit lighter than I expected. It tastes of malt sweetness up front with citrus hops kicking in strong and leading into a long, bitter finish for this lightly carbonated beer. Very solid.

Nelson IIPA version. Appearance is fine. Mildly cloudy, bright orange. A dissipating head that stuck around for awhile as a thin film of bubbles. The aroma is grassy with tropical fruits - more kiwi/papaya than pineapple, like some hops. A bit grapey, too. Not quite strong enough for my taste but pretty good. On the palate, it starts out with some hop resin flavor with an alright crystal malt backbone, but the finish mars things with a big booze note that goes particularly poorly with the grassy bitterness. Mouthfeel is, well, hot. Plus, the beer is a bit sticky. Didn’t much like this one, despite the hop choice.

Draft at the brewpub. Hazy golden color. Aroma of intense grass, hay, lemon, grapefruit. Taste has tons of smooth citrus, but isn’t over the top. Good stuff.

Bottle. Pours a clear orange with a gold hue and a white head that dissipated slowly to the edges and laces. Aroma is full of pine hops with a bit of sweet grains and a backing of sweet onion. Flavor began with pine with grew to include some resin notes as well as a sweet onion backing. Luckily for me, the onion was not too strong.
