Named for the scenic ridge that runs between Blanco and Wimberly, Devil's Backbone is a Belgian-style trippel. Brewed in the traditional manner, Czech Saaz hops and Belgian yeast give this ale its distinctive flavor and aroma. Candy sugar made in-house at the brewery adds strength without increasing heaviness. The result is a deceptively strong, pale golden ale.

Courtesy of sebletitje. Pours cloudy gold with thin white head. The aroma is sweet apple, pears, some apricot skin, brown sugar and honey. The taste is pretty spicy with sweet apple, pears and then becoming slightly tart, drying and holding onto some tart fruitiness. It ends pretty dry. Nice Texan Triple.

Bottle. Pours a clear gold with a white head that lasts throughout the beer and laces nicely. Aroma has a strong sweet fruit and floral note with some candied sugar and sweet grains. Flavor is a bit more mellow with a semi sweet grain start that becomes sweeter with candied sugar and light fruits. Drinks lightly which is nice and refreshing.

Banana and peach nose, pretty nice. Hazy amber. Lots of banana flavor. Finish is decidedly more bitter lemon grass. Superbly drinkable for a Tripel.

On tap. Pours with a fluffy white head over a near clear golden body. Aroma of candi sugar, pear, must, dry breadiness, and some lively spices. Very nice and to style. Taste is Candi sugar, pear, apple brandy, alcohol and must. Some pastry notes. Finishes dry residual sugars and a few fruity esters on the finishes. Dry, alcoholic finish. Really well done.

12 oz bottle shared by beastiefan2k. 10.13.10 best if consumed before stamped on label. Pour is hazed yellow golden, with a smallish white head. Aroma is grassy sweet, mildly herbal, and rounded out with a nice soft floral bitterness. Clove yeast comes through in the back of the nose. Taste is the herbal sweet grass, followed right away by the clove yeast. Nice integration of flavors. Palate is medium, with a slicker mouth feel. Dry finish. Enjoyable, well made beer. Thanks for sharing Eugene. 8,4,7,4,15 (3.8).

Draft - shaker pint glass at Beavers in Houston, TX. Pour is hazy orange golden, not too much head. Very thick lacing remained during the entire beer. Aroma is very thickly sweet and yeasty. Sweetness is honey and flowery. Very much a trippel nose. Taste is citrus fruity, pears, wheat, candy sugar yeast and some intersting hay - yeastiness. Seems to be some hop bitterness present throughout. A slight bit cloying in the finish. Nice one. 8,4,7,3,15 (3.7)

On tap at flying saucer. Has an orange amber color with a small off white head that diminishes quickly. The aroma is a strong clove aroma. The taste is also clove and citrus. A good abbey from real ale.
