Named for the scenic ridge that runs between Blanco and Wimberly, Devil's Backbone is a Belgian-style trippel. Brewed in the traditional manner, Czech Saaz hops and Belgian yeast give this ale its distinctive flavor and aroma. Candy sugar made in-house at the brewery adds strength without increasing heaviness. The result is a deceptively strong, pale golden ale.

Sample at GABF 10/11/2012, thanks to Bluemeow76 for assistance with note-taking. This beer is a hazy yellow-amber color with a medium fizzy white head and spotty lacing. Aroma of yeast, spices and fruit. Medium body with flavors of citrus, yeast and bready malt. The finish is sweet banana and yeast. Good Tripel all around.

12oz bottle that a friend brought from Texas. Pour is clear golden at first, has no head, and the body gets a bit cloudier with the final pour. Aroma is nice sweet pear and herbal with lots of yeast. There is some sweetness but its is melded very well with the rest of the beer. Flavor similarly follows with very appealing pear esters with a nice dry coriander. The flavor has less sweetness than the aroma hints, and it finishes dry. The herbal aspect offsets the sweetness as well. Mouthfeel has a great spritz-y feel, which adds to the herbal character. This is the best 12oz bottled American made Tripel.

Bottle 35,5 cl. Courtesy of MaltOMeal. Pours golden with a slight haze and a white head leaving a little lacework. Sweet fruity nose with a little yeast and phenols. Rather solid body, lots of sweet malt and fruit, rather sophisticated candy flavours with a discreet yeastiness. Warming alcohol finish. 021110

Aroma of candi sugar, caramel, cotton candy and clove. The taste is citrus, caramel, bread, peach and pear. Medium bodied. Tasty Tripel.

Courtesy of sebletitje. Pours cloudy gold with thin white head. The aroma is sweet apple, pears, some apricot skin, brown sugar and honey. The taste is pretty spicy with sweet apple, pears and then becoming slightly tart, drying and holding onto some tart fruitiness. It ends pretty dry. Nice Texan Triple.
