Belgian-Style Saison Ale

Our Spring Saison is light blonde in color with a fresh hoppiness and a wild and rustic Brettanomyces character. Lighter in color and alcohol than our Saison Rue, yet equally complex in its own way. Perfect for warmer weather and Spring celebrations.

Admin Note: Bruery has started to brew this beer again under the Bruery Terreux label.

Bouteille 750ml. Couleur or translucide, mousse blanche dense, crémeuse et persistente laissant une belle dentelle. Arôme de levure, houblon, brett, côté un peu fermier. On draught at Bad Apple, 4/17/14
Slightly-hazed light straw yellow body is topped by a moderate amount of white foam. Moderate retention.
Initial herbal/peppery hop aromatics are brushed aside, a bit unceremoniously, by a rather stiff peachy-lemon fruitiness that is a bit brash and seems a bit more BSA-like than saison-like. Some vanillla and cookie-like malt notes on the end, with warming notes of alcohol mixing with the esters to produce more BSA notes.
Again, as in the nose, the hop profile is immediately attractive, showing herbs and spices of all sorts with light grassiness. The malt is fairly well-attenuated here, thankfully, with some biscuits and grainy character working well with the hop flavors. The yeast is just a touch too doughy, fruity and for lack of a better term, completely classless. Definite allusions to their Mischief, with that big bubble gum-peach-lemon note that certainly took over in that beer. Here it’s less dominant, thankfully. But I’m still scarred from the experience of drinking Mischief....Whatever theyre doing, they need to tone down this huge fruitiness. And I didnt find any bit of brett character. Mouthfeel is slick, well-carbonated and a touch loose. Could use a good deal more tightness on the carbonation.

Bottle: Pours a hazy light yellow color with an inch of white head. Quite a bit of lacing too. Mild aroma, but very pleasant for the style. Nice yeast presence, a light citrus/floral balance, and hints of spices. Sour/tart notes emerge in the flavor, along with wheat, light florals, and very light citrus. Clean and refreshing. Nice.

Bottle, 75cl. Lacings are left as the off-white head sinks. More or less clear, golden body. Sort of grainy aroma, with some grassy, fruity notes. Some cooked vegetables and a faint note of wet cardboard. Medium to thin on the palate, with pleasant carbonation. Quite dry. The flavor is grainy and with some cooked vegetables. Grass and some herbal notes, a soft bitterness kicking in. I’m a bit reluctant to say this is disappointing, but I think I think it is. 130614
