Bourbon Barrel-Aged Sour Barleywine collaboration with Surly Brewing

In collaboration with our friends at Surly Brewing, Dark Forest is a unique Barleywine blend highlighting the strengths of both breweries. Theirs being bold & burly. Ours being tart & fruity. Both were laid down in freshly emptied bourbon barrels in CO & MN, then blended and finished on fresh spruce tips. Set out on a drinking experience to the Dark Forest. We recommend bringing a friend along with you.

500 mL bottle poured. Thanks, T! Darker copper amber pour, patchy head that lasts. Aroma is heavy caramel and bready malts, with the slightest hint of a berry note. Hot first sip, thick caramel malts, bready afterthought, cool piney spruce tip influence. Flavorful barleywine with a winter fresh cool touch. Almost has a tart side to it. Flavorful barleywine and ultimately unique.

An incredibly fluffy frothy head the lasts a long time. Aromas are wet grains, figs and a little amber malt. Nice balance between sweet and sour, alcohol is well hidden. Nothing too distinctive though.

Bottle shared by Jeff, thanks! Pours a clear deep amber with an orange hue and a white head that dissipates to the edges. Aroma has sweet grains and a bit of sour apple and a hint of toffee backing. Flavor has bread and sweet grains with a bit of toffee and some sour earthy fruit in the finish.

Corked and caged bottle from Woodman’s Appleton, 4/15/22. Hazy orange red, ,thin creamy tan head, good retention. Aroma of cherry, funk, toffee, vanilla, bourbon. Taste is grape, cherry, toffee, funk, bourbon, vanilla. Everything in balance. Mild lingering tartness. If anything its too meek, but, if any part of it were more assertive it would probably throw off the excellent balance. Overall very nice.

Draft/Fest. A- Cherry, caramel, malt, subtle cocoa. A- Copper color, hazy liquid, off white head. T- Boozy, cherry, sweet, chewing gum. P- Medium body, average texture, average carbonation, sweet finish. O- Cherry bubblegum is the first thing that comes to mind. A bit sweet and a tad unique. Like this one but not sure the flavor is what I anticipated.
