Every Guinness you’ve ever enjoyed can be traced back to this recipe. A direct descendant of our archival recipes, Guinness Extra Stout is based on a beer first brewed in 1821, when Arthur Guinness II set down precise instructions for brewing his Superior Porter. Sharp and crisp to the taste with the trademark Guinness flavors at its core.

So I was surprised to see the beers I stole at a party were actually a different version than the Canadian one. Dark brown and beige head. Molasses and malts. Sweet and a little thin.

Pour is a complete black with a large tan head. Aroma is a decent roasted malt but not much beyond that. Flavor is more of a minor roasted malt with a little bitter bakers chocolate. While you have to respect the history of this brewer, this beer is a bit lacking in overall flavor. There are tons of modern day stouts that are better than this beer.

Bottle. "Guinness Original XX". Looks like a Guinness. Black with a big beige head. Aroma of roasted malts. Taste is roasted malts, liquorice, coffee, milk chocolate, cookies and some hops. Medium to strong carbonation. Feels more full-bodied than Draught and the european Extra Stout. Very nice.

From old tasting notes. Opaque black brown color. Creamy beige head. Slightly less dark than the North American version. Nice roasted malt and hop nose. smooth roasted malt flavor has a bit more accent on hop character than the North American version. Slightly smoky palate throughout. Tangy dark malt finish. Long bitter aftertaste. Outstanding.
