Blended Culture American Sour Ale Aged in Virgin Oak and Red Wine Barrels
Culture Collab is a true collaboration of ideas, flavors, and craft with our friends at New Belgium Brewing, the gold standard for barrel-aged sour beers in the U.S. This American sour ale features wort fermented with New Belgium’s classic “Felix” culture–the oldest souring culture maintained in the United States–then blended with wort fermented with Surly’s house cultures. We place the result in virgin oak and red wine barrels along with whole blueberries. The finished product is golden-amber, delightfully complex, and mildly tart. Expect wine-like notes of peach, oak, green grass, and vanilla, with a dry, fruit-tannin finish from the extended aging on blueberry skins.

Can. Pours a clear gold with an amber hue and a white head that dissipates quickly to the edges. Aroma has a combination of tart blackberry and dry red wine with a bit of sweet grain and straw underlying. Flavor leads with sour blackberry, has a dry red wine note and a bit of sweet grain in the finish.

Can 47,3 cl. Pours a cloudy, opaque amber with a tiny, dissipating off-white head. Complex aroma of acetobacter and wood. Medium body, noble rot, acetobacter and oak. The blueberries aren't really present. 051122

Boxed pint can from Woodman's Appleton, 12/25/20. Clear copper. thin fizzy head. Aroma of vinegar, berry, tannins, caramel. Funky and smells very sour. Taste is vinegar, grape, berry, oak. Medium bodied, bright, funky. No bitterness. Comes across like a Flanders red. Solid.

The aromas are fruity vinegar with a little bit of malt. Flavors are very similar to nose the blueberries are super subtle but you can really pick up on the red wine from the barrels. Decent sour beer.
