Der Begriff Schmäuß stammt aus dem 15. Jahrhundert und bezeichnet das Getränk beziehungsweise das Gebräu. Damals war das Bierbrauen lediglich vom Michaeli- (29.9) bis zum Georgi-Tag (23.4) erlaubt. Allerdings wurde das "Schmäußbräuen" seit dem Dreißigjährigen Krieg (1618 bis 1648) als zusätzliches Privileg gewährt. Dies jedoch nur Bürgern der Oberen Stadt Kronachs und ausschließlich zu besonderen festlichen Anlässen, im Sinne des „Schmausens“. Abgeleitet ist der Begriff vermutlich von „schmausen“, da auf solchen Festen üppig gegessen und getrunken, eben geschmaust wurde. Dieser guten Tradition fühlen wir uns gerne verpflichtet. Wenn die Kronacher daher das erste Fass Schmäußbräu an der Melchior Ottosäule zum Start des "Historischen Stadtfestes" anschlagen, dann sind wir an diesem Wochenende ganz besonders "Schmäusig".

Bottled. Hazy pale copper colour, rich lively head. Fruity nose with apples and notes of smoke. Mid sweet with medium body and clean, rounded mouthfeel. Sweet red apples, notes of gtrass and bread. Low bitterness.

Ordentliches Bier, würzig, malzig, nicht zu komplex. Sehr süffig, aber auch nicht zu spektakulär.

Ins Glas ergießt sich ein bernsteinfarbenes Bier mit ordentlicher Schaumkrone. Geruch malzig, getreidig, leicht würzig. Geschmack malzig würzig, getreidig, leichte Bitterkeit.

Pours a amber color with an aroma of grain, lemon and hops. Flavor with hops, lemon and grain.

500ml bottle. Clear amber colour with medium to huge frothy white head. Decent grainy, slightly caramel malty aroma with a hay note. Nice caramel malty taste, decent dry hop note. Inconspicuous but nice.

Bottled (thanks fonefan!). Copper colour with a mediumsized beigeish head. Aroma is sweet malts, some mild toasted notes as well as some smoked wet wood and nutty notes. Flavour is nutty, smoked wet wood, some herbs and mild caramelly notes. Mild notes of blood (metallicness) as well. A bit thin in the palate.

Bottled. An amber beer with an orangey head. The aroma has notes of malt and caramel as well as a touch of spices. The flavor is sweet with notes of malt and caramel - as well as light notes of smoke. I think it should be listed as a smoked.

Deep clear copper brown color, good beige head. Toasted sugar, some malts, iron and grassy hops in the nose. Crisp carbonation, reasonably malty for 4.5% beer. Flavor has light smoked malts, metal and some grassy hoppyness. Sweetish notes in the aftertaste. Interesting and very Bavarian.

Bottle 50cl. w. swing top.Clear medium amber color with a average, fizzy, fair lacing, fully diminishing, off-white head. Aroma is light moderate malty, roasted, light to moderate yeasty, peat - smoke - rubber. Flavor is light to moderate sweet and light bitter with a average duration. Body is light to medium, texture is watery, carbonation is soft. [20090321]
