We love keeping German beer traditions alive and bringing them into the future…even if that means brewing styles that take a bit of getting used to for many drinkers. Last year, we brewed Grilled Unicorn, a Bamberg-inspired Rauchbier but with an added twist of smoky-spicy Puja Peppers. Well, Smoked Unicorn is the same beer just without the Puja Peppers. So this is a classic smoked Märzen. Lightly smoky with a touch of malty sweetness this Unicorn will put you on its back and whisk you away to Bamberg even if you are sitting in a Berlin beer bar.

Draught @ Braugier Taproom Ostkreuz. Pours clear dark brown with a small tan head. Aroma of malt, caramel, smoked meat. Flavor is light sweet, smokey, malty, caramel, smoked meat, light peppers. Medium body, average carbonation, light sweet finish with a little chili heat. 040424

From tap. Pours golden brown to amber, thick tan head. Meaty smoked. Smooth smoked. Mild sweetness. Toasted malty. Lingering smoked. Medium sweet and smoked finish.

On a flight in Berlin, 15th May 2023, Ostkreuz. Red hue to the amber body, fast fading beige head. Wood smoke aroma and smoked ham taste, I do struggle with Rauchbier but I thought I'd try again!

Draught Head fast gone, leaving lace over bit veiled reddish amber beer. Smoked, Rauchmals nose; smoked/cured ham, hint of sulphur. Soft smoked ham, bit of resin, Rauchmalz dominates, but is not oppressive. Medium bodied at best; medium carbonation, bit slick. A soft, but pleasing mild Rauch.
