Appelsienen en chocolade - what’s not to like?

20 May 2023. At Leuven Innovation Beer Festival. Shared with the lovely Anke!

Restrained Pastry Stout, a feat in itself I'd say.

Stout flavoured with cocoa nibs and dried orange peel, named after the classic chocolate-coated candied orange peel sticks we all know and love; from a new nanobrewery in Leuven, run by two young entrepreneurs also dabbling in furniture making apparently. Pale greyish off-white, dense, medium thick, stable head, black robe with misty mahogany edges. Aroma of coffee grounds, indeed dried orange peel, roasted walnuts, burnt toast, apple peel, dried fig, Pim’s cakes without the sweetness of it. Clean, sweet onset, raisin and dried fig, less sweet than expected though with an early presence of bitterish orange peel; medium carb, slick oily mouthfeel. Pecan-nutty, black-toasty malt core, a tad bitter-chocolatey round the edges but less so than expected based on the premise, with the cocoa nibs remaining relatively modest in flavour as well; a mild dosage of roasted coffee-like bitterness ensues, paired with indeed clear orange peel flavouring, which adds a spicy bitter note and aromatic aspect to an otherwise solid, tasty, balanced and well-made ‘basic’ stout; I was, however, expecting something much more pastry stout-like, with a lot more chocolatey sweetness conveying the whole orangette idea, so I am not sure if this technically well-constructed beer will satisfy the expectations some may have. In any case interesting enough to seek out their other creations – if one can obtain them outside of Leuven, of course…
