We Consider this an extreme version of an American Pale Ale. It has a very up front floral and citrus aroma from a late cascade addition and dry hopping with Amarillo. This beer also has a big malt background to balance the bitterness of the hops. The rye malt cleans up your palette after you swallow so the hop flavor does not stick in your mouth too long.

Terrapin Rye is a solid pale ale, if a mild one. The cascade and amarillo hops make for a nice piney finish, but the floral and citrus notes mentioned in the description above never truly blossom. Rather, RPA presents a lightly sweet malt front coupled with a flavorful but restrained rye tang, nothing life-changing, but good for a summer day. Or a pre-Spring day, I guess. NOTE: Gave this beer a few more points after having some super-fresh. Apparently the presence of rye, like hops, falls victim to fading; big difference between fresh and three-month old Rye Pale Ale.

A golden amber pale ale with a thin white head. In aroma, nice floral hops, nice and smooth, with light caramel notes. In mouth, a smooth caramel malt, with light British hops, a bit on the lighter side. On tap at Ravenous Pig , Jan 8 2011.

12 oz bottle courtesy of my 2010 winter Secret Santa. Pour is a slight hazed oange copper with a two inch off white head that is lasting. Falls with nice splotchy lacing. Aroma is slightly resinous grain, along with a soft rye bread. Taste is more of the rye than the resin hop, though there is a nice balance between the two. The finish picks up on the rye again, and finishes with a bit of spiciness. Palate is thin to medium bodied, clean, dry and crisp finish. Nice one, thanks Santa!

12 oz. bottle. Pours a hazy dark orange color with a almost no head. The aroma is citrus and floral hops and some bready malts. The flavor is very bitter, with almost no attempt at balance. The body is medium and the palate is rough and acidic. A great beer for hop lovers, but not very subtle.

Bottle at BCTC 2010. Excellent beer. Pours gold with a medium, off-white head. Great hop aroma with some earthy malts in there too. Flavor is sweet with some discernable rye and caramel, then quite hoppy with grass, earth, light orange and grapefruit. Medium bodied with average carbonation. Finishes bitter and crisp. Great beer.

Like many Terrapin beers, I fail to see the attraction here - rye adds a bit of depth to an otherwise lackluster pale, but it adds a bit of spice and tang, bordering on a sour character - mild, indistinct malt sweetness - citric, semi-stale hoppiness - somewhat clean in the finish, with lingering lemony tang - boring.

Purchased on my trip in Nashville. Ah yeah... beautiful Cascade hop nose... I like it already. Golden colour with an off-white creamy head, good retention and nice lace. The rye is more apparent in the taste (and off course, the hop is present as well). Crisp medium-light palate with a little dry finish that is really refreshing. A nice little twist on the American Pale Ale with the rye that is great for summer.

Variety 24-pack ($36): Pours a copper color with a quickly dissipating head. Aroma of malts and rye and also has a little bit of that that you find in the pale lager aroma... not in a bad way, but rather in a qualitative way. There is a rye sweetness underlying the whole thing. The beer taste enter in multiple stages underlying the complexity of flavors. There is a medium amount of hops for the style, and there is a slightly bitter aftertaste of hops. Overall, pretty good beer with various competing flavors held in balance by a good structure.

Bottle from ericandersnavy. Pours lightly hazy amber with a few white bubbles for head. Nice floral aroma with a touch of citrus. Medium body with mild but sharpish carbonation. Flavor starts rather floral over a little malt, and finishes not harshly bitter. Indeed the rye does seem to chase away the hop. Quite different, and very drinkable.
