Starr Hill’s Dark Starr Stout has won more national and international awards than any other Dry Irish Stout in the country. Brewed with roasted barley, and with hints of coffee and dark chocolate, it packs a robust taste into a surprisingly light body. This signature brew pours like velvet and drinks like a slice of grandma’s pumpernickel bread.

Aroma: Roasted malts, coffee, chocolate
Appearance: Dark brown color with a brown head
Flavor: Malty sweet, with enough hops to make it well balanced
Palate: Decent mouthfeel, but a little too thin
Overall Impression: I was a little surprised to see I hadn't rated this one previously, because I have had it before on multiple occasions, but I guess it somehow escaped the note pad until now. Anyway, on to the beer itself. I like it, but it isn't special, and it drinks a little too thin for the style in my opinion. Solid enough though.

Pours deep amber and with tan head. The aroma is nice with molasses, chocolate, some burnt malts to go along with mildly roasty malts. The taste is smooth and thin with roast, some burnt malts, a bit of coffee and a touch of chocolate. It gets very thin into the finish with lingering burnt malts.

courtesy of ? in our tasting crew. pours light brown, off white head. aroma roasted malts, hints of lactose/coffee, and smoked malts. flavor, roasted malts, dry palate with hints of chocolate malts and possible smoke adding some char element. Starts of nice but midway it yields to a bad burnt mouthfeel.

Thanks to JaBier for sharing a bottle. The beer pours a not entirely opaque brownish black color with a thin light beige head that recedes quickly. Stringy lacing on the glass. Roasted coffee and chocolate in the nose. Medium body that is watery at times with flavors of coffee and burnt malt plus a bit of chocolate. The finish is short and mildly bitter with a coffee aftertaste. Uncomplicated and forgettable lighter Stout overall.

No aroma. Black and opaque it poured with a thick brown creamy head, and good lacing. It tasted of charcoal and tangy coffee, sufficiently hoppy, finishing with a metallic piney espresso. On paper this a decent brew, but it is lacking somehow in the gestalt effect. All the admirable qualities are there, but they don’t intermingle as well.

12oz bottle. Deep, black color. Foamy, tan, soapy head. Dry and roasty with a smooth watery mouhfeel. Delicious chocolate and roasted malt aftertaste. Delicate hopping adds balance. I agree with the previous rater in finding a burnt, smoky character to the beer as well. Quite enjoyable stuff, the most noteworthy beer I’ve had from Starr Hill.

Nice deep black coloured body with a frothy tan head. Aroma of fresh hops up front with some roasted malt and a nice bit of caramel - very nice in the nose! Medium-bodied; Sharp roasty flavours with coffee and nuts coming out, but the hops are still definitely there. Aftertaste also shows some good malty tastes and a light sweetness. Overall, a very nice well-rounded stout that would be definitely recommended. I sampled this twelve ounce bottle purchased from Total Wine in McLean, Virginia on 05-April-2008.

Bottle from Whole Foods Charlottesville. Jet black with a very large head, long retention and awesome lacing. Aroma is roasty, mocha and metal. Taste is coffee, chocolate and mint with a nice hop bitterness. Aftertaste is a bit off.

After having quite a few Imperial Stouts, it was nice to finally have a stout that I could drink and not start feeling the effects almost immediately. The beverage pours an extremely dark brown-black. Aromas are roasted malts, chocolate, coffee. Flavor is coffee, roasted malts, and a slight hint of chocolate. It’s not extraordinary, but I sure did enjoy it.
