This traditional lager is medium in body with a deep roasted character. Its dark color and rich malty flavor come from specially roasted caramel and chocolate malts. This brew is lightly hopped with Noble Bavarian hops for a soft spiciness and a smooth clean finish. Cheers!

Bottle at home in Salisbury. Thanks to Nellzer for sharing with me! Pours brown with a foaming, beige head. Very creamy. Aroma holds some charcoal, dark bread and sugar, some fruits. Light to medium sweet flavor with a nice, burnt bread character. Some mild ash in there too, with dark berries and light earthy bitterness. Light to medium bodied with average, smooth carbonation. Decent roastiness to finish, with burnt sugar, light bitterness, and burnt toast. Flavor doesn’t quite deliver in the finish as I had hoped, but still nice. Pretty easy drinking. Not bad at all. I was in Germany recently and sampled a handful of schwarzbiers; this one is better than several of those.

Bottle. Brown colour with a light beige head. Roasted malt nose. Moderate sweet caramel flavour with some roasted notes, light hoppy.

(Bottle, 0.335 l, at Viking Line Gabriella, 20111114) The beer poured very dark brown and clear. Its head was medium sized and white. Aroma had roasted malts, metallicness and chocolate. Palate was medium bodied with medium carbonation. Flavours were roasted malts, sweetness, metallicness, burnt malts and low bitterness. Aftertaste was mildly roasty and bitter. Too sweet for a schwarz but otherwise nice.

355 ml. bottle from supermarket. Black colour with red-brown hues. Small, creamy tanned head leaving minimal lacing. Aroma of chocolate, coffee, and some dark, candied fruits with a very faint roasted note as well. Taste is roasted, chocolate, caramel, coffee, some honey and distant molasses. Medium body with soft carbonation. Enjoyed it.

Purchased at Vas Foremost in Chicago, IL; enjoyed on Halloween night. Aroma of lager yeast, a bit of chocolate, not too pungent. Appearance is black with brown notes around the bottom of the glass, thin off white head. Taste is pretty smooth with above average carbonation, the chocolate comes out more in the flavor. It does have a nice crisp finish, not too sweet. This is pretty good.

En finstämd men ändå ganska komplex svart lager. Doften är riktigt fin och smaken är len, mjuk och rund med härliga rostade toner av chokladkola, vörtbröd, torkad frukt och aningens kaffe. Liten efterbeska. Riktigt god.

Every once and a while, Sam Adams gets a style down pat, and they’ve done so again with their Black Lager. American, yes, but handles the finesse of coupling dark malts with lager fragility quite well. This beer has the required roastiness to match its color, but the texture is smooth and silky, while the finish has a Euro-floral hop bitterness on top of yeasty apple cider. Pretty good brew. A 12oz bottle from Pick’s liquors poured into a Shaker glass. Light tan head that sits around for a while. Black in color. Scent is very malty and slightly hoppy. Medium bitter taste. Medium bodied and thick textured. Average carbonation and a long finish. This beer tastes dark. Like dark chocolate and dark coffee. Overall its a pretty good beer. I may be buying it again some day but it wont be till winter. It’s just too hot to drink a beer like this.
